unknown shtetl #lithuania

Winnie71@...

I have a document that said that my ggmother Rachel Gertenstein came from
Dervil. I can not find that shtetl anywhere. Does anyone think that it could
be Shkudvil? It may be a wild hunch of mine but I have no other ideas. Please
respond to

we had form letters translated into Russian and Lithuanian that were

Can we also have it in Latvian? Some of the shtetls now in Latvia were
formerly in the Vitebsk Gubernia!

Inquiries on MUSICANT, NAVIDSON AND SCHNEIDERMAN #belarus

My family is >from the Belarusian shtetls of Luninets and Kozanhorodok. The

in Davyd Horodok and was related to the Horodoker Rabbi and Chernobyl
Magids. Yacov was an orphan. We would appreciate any information that
members may have that would be useful in following leads to Davyd Horodok
(and Chernobyl). Of course we are pursuing the traditional avenues for
information but also wanted to post here.
Thanks -

Website #latvia

Elsebeth Paikin

You might find something of interest on the Paikin Genalogy Project's
official website.

The various Paikin-families come >from Belarus originally, but later moved
north to Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and south to e.g. Odessa, Kiev, before
emigrating.

There are descriptions of some of the sthetls (hope to be able to write
more later), and then there are all the persons married into the family.

And there are photos - also of some unidentified persons

If you find any errors, misunderstandings etc. I would be grateful to hear
about it.

An update on the Microfilm project #latvia

Martha Lev-Zion <martha@...>

Shalom to all our fellow Latvian descendents!

We are getting ready to purchase the entire set of microfilms
of Latvia, but we are still short of money. We are going to
go ahead and endebt ourselves, hoping that the rest of you
from whom we heard nothing, will now chip in and share the
expense with the others of us who have already pledged
specific amounts toward the purchase of these microfilms. We
now have a small group of volunteers who are willing to help
us put the information into a database. The more volunteers we
have, the faster your town will get into the database, so
please jump on the band wagon and help us!

Based on the experience of the other SIGs, the first areas we
are going to put into the database are the villages the
people who have donated to the project are interested in.
That's only fair, after all.

Also, we are going to give a CD ROM containing early
business directories >from Latvia to those who help this
project in a significant way. These directories include the
business owner's last name and first initial; type of business
and address. Some have phone numbers listed. These are major
businesses which are privately owned. The listings are by
type of business and then these listings are broken down by
district, number of employees and so forth. The pages are
written in the Latin alphabet in Lettish, so they are easy to
read.

We would appreciate any comments or questions you may have
and any financial and time commitments you can make. If you
have particular experience with setting up this type of
database, we would welcome your help, suggestions and
comments.

We're on our way now!!

Martha Lev-Zion for Paul Berkey, Bramie Lenhoff and the team
of volunteers.
