Re: what is the given name of "Slioma?" #belarus

Daniel E. Gershenson <gershens@...>

Shlyoma is the regular hypocoristic for Shelomo, Solomon in the Litvak
Yiddish speaking area, which, of course includes Belarus. Shneur was the
first name of the founder of the CHaBaD Movement, Shneur Zalman of Lyadi.
His name is half Spanish Senyor (=Shneur) and half German Zalman (the
German pronunciation of Solomon).

I am also very interested in the answer to this question. As a little
girl growing up in a very concervative synagogue I remember by father
being called to the torah and explaining to me it was because he was a
levite.

It never occured to me to question this so the answer would be
interesting

I am amongst the lucky people who have recently received a response >from
Vitalija Gircyte of the Kaunas archives. Although it took a year, she
had obviously put a great deal of effort into assembling the material,
and one can only be very grateful to her for her interest. She even
found a 1910 village plan of the shtetl I am interested in, Kvedarna,
with numbered lots and a list of real estate owners.

Although my enquiries were directed specifically to a number of families
(which she very kindly offered to do all at the same time, and for the
one fee), amongst the documents which she sent me were a Box List for
the whole community for 1885 (listing 127 families), and lists of
members of theJewish community entitled to vote in elections for the
local administration in 1891 (58 persons - with their ages) and for the
election of the Rabbi in 1912 (48 persons, also with ages). All of
these she translated!! A magnificent effort >from her !!

As these larger lists of names may be of interest to others,
particularly in the Rasseiniai district, I will post them in the course
of the next few days - but I cannot do all at the same time. Here is
the first.
