The Name "Bunim" #general

Allen B. Saxe <saxe@...>

My grandfather Bunim SCHARJA lived in Janow,Poland near Bialystok. His
name Bunim is Yiddish for "good". The discussions of "Hebrew equivalents"
and Shem Israel have encouraged me to get our members thoughts on my
grandfather's possible Hebrew name. This has become a more important part
of my research since I have learned of a group of Scharja brothers with the
names Israel, Hershel Zvi,and Zeidel. Of these three we can elliminate the
latter two.
I appreciate the time, thought and assistance of those who respond.

Cieplice, Galicia #general

Pyotr@...

I am seeking information on Cieplice, Poland. The town is found on
Jewish Gen's Shtetl Finder, just north of Sieniawa, in the Jaroslaw
district. It must be a tiny town. My great grand father was born there.
Please help if you can.

Town of Vonkhotsk #general

Harry Zimmerman <JoelWire@...>

Recently someone translated some metrical records for me and came up with
the name of the town as Vonkhotsk. The town is in Poland and should be
near Wierzbnik but I was unable to find it in WOWW. Does anyone have any
clues? Could it be so small as to not show up on a map? Where would someone
suggest I look to find this place. I am at a loss. I know that it must be
near Wierzbnik. The family name is unusual and all of the other documents
from the regional archive in Poland which I have recieved have had all of
the BDM events occuring in Wierzbnik.

Many Thanks,
Sandy Zimmerman

Hello,

Could somebody help me to find Rafaino or Rafainovo? According to a Yad

Where are Rebook and Gison? #general

DialexLtd@...

I have information on two of my grandmothers. One came >from Gison (Gaisin)
Padolsky Gub in Russia, the other >from Rebook, near Risayne, Kovne Gebernya
in Lithuania. I looked in Shtetlseeker and found either hundreds or zero
matches, depending on how I looked. Can anyone tell me if Padolsky Gub and
Kovne Gebernya are regions, or how they can help me narrow my search?
Thanks for any help.

Sorry, I am posting this message to Jewishgen, but the Modlin and ScHneider
email addresses have not worked. This message is important to them:

I have read your messages, seeking Sam Katz. He is a first cousin of my
father's. I tried to reply to each of your email addresses without
success. Sam and I have spoken. He said that he has tried unsuccessfully
to reach either of you regarding the MESHURIS search.

Being that I realize you are anxious for his reply--He said that he doesn't
recall people by the name MESHURIS >from Munkacs/Mukachevo Hungary. He is
not searching for people by that name. He is very sorry he can't help you.

Best wishes with your search. We hope you have success!

Re: Israeli Given Names--What Gender? #general

David Ziants <davidz@...>

I originally mistakenly stated: << .... "Uzi" in itself is not a word or
an official name, but a diminutive of Uziel...>>

Please allow me to post a correction and an apology, especially to all
those with the name Uzi.

Having done a bit of research, prompted by a couple of J-Genners, I
found references in the Tanach (Bible) to six different people with
the name Uzi, and so this CAN be an official name.

"uzi" (with a kubbutz) (="my strength") DOES appear as a word and more
often than "ozi" (with a hataf-kamatz) which occurs in a famous phrase.

I still maintain that the modern Israeli name Uzi can *sometimes* be a
nick-name for Uziel.

Yedida is Hebrew for friend (fem). It is a not uncommon name among
Sfardim. Male form, Yadid is rare. I guess both originate >from Yedidyah
(friend of God) which has a vernerable status. Gottlied is a German/
Yiddish translation, so essentially is Lieber, and its derivative Lippman.

The iedida spelling might appear in German documents as Jedidah and in
French/English and other languages as Yedidah.

When you say marriage certificate I assume you do not refer to a ketuba
which usually has a caption such as "the rjoicing of the bride and the
groom" and then starts formally with "On the nth day of the Sabbath, the
xth day of the months of Y in the year Z since the creation of the world as
we reckon it in this town of . . . . " I do not see how Iedida would fit
into a ketuba, unless it's part of a variant caption with which I'm not
familiar.
