Searching: SHESKINs of Grodno, MELTZERS of Vilna #general

debra a leone <debleone@...>

I am seeking information about my grandparents.
My grandmother, Rachel SHESKIN was born in the early 1900's in Grodno.
She had three sisters, Ida, Esther and Rose and two brothers, Chaim and
Hillel. The pictures we have of my great-grandfather indicate that he
was a cantor. When they left Grodno Hillel stayed behind and eventually
got caught up in the war. He and his wife and children were in hiding
when they were discovered by the Nazi's and supposedly shot. If anyone
knows of this family and their ultimate demise please let me know.

My grandfather Schmuel, left Vilna at 14 in the early 1900's. I do not
know much about his family other than there were several brothers named
Max and Sam and a sister named Minnie.

I know that Vilna and Grodno are big places. How can I find out more
precise information about where they were from? Thanks for the help.

Descendants of King David #general

Matthew Meisel <matthew24@...>

Dear JGenners,

A visitor to my web site (address below) sent me a copy of his family
tree and asked if there is a web site or someone that is interested in
it. The tree itself goes back to King David.
My question is twofold:
1) Is there someone out there who would be interested in the tree? I'd
be more than happy to put you in touch with its author.
2) After hearing of numerous success stories, it seems that several
people have successfully traced their ancestry back to King David. Why
not create a database of the descendants of King David? Would JewishGen
be willing to host such a database?

Jews in Russo-Japanese War #general

stephen roth <snrothmd@...>

I have obtained a list of all Jews reported killed or wounded in
the Russo-Japanese war (1905). There are several thousand names on
the list. The list is in Russian so I'm not sure of the extent of the
information it gives, but I did discern that it at least gives the
first and last name of each person concerned, the town and gubernya
where they were from, whether the person was wounded or killed, and
the date the person was wounded or killed. Would any group or
individual be interested in obtaining a copy so it can be translated
and posted on the internet? If so, please reply.

seeking Kovno/Kaunas information #general

Saul Goldstone <sgoldsto@...>

JewishGeners,

What are my chances of getting birth/marriage/death certificates from
Kovno/Kaunas for the period >from 1850 to 1900?

How do I go about requesting them? Addressed to whom? At what cost?

Is it possible to do this completely by mail, or is it more likely to
succeed by hiring someone locally to do it?

Thanks,
Saul Goldstone

Help Requested for Translation of Post Card #general

Carole Feinberg <feincgs@...>

Shalom, JewishGenners,

I am hoping to hear >from a Genner or two who can translate the writing on
the back of a postcard my grandfather, Chaim HILLEBRAND, sent to his
father, Wolf HILLEBRAND, during World War I.

My grandfather was "invited" to fight for the Germans against the Russians,
and he "enjoyed" the Russian "hospitality" as a Prisoner of War.

I'm attaching two files, front and back of this postcard. Chaim is seated
on the left. ELLENBERG (a friend?) is seated on the right.

Thanks in advance to whoever can read these files and help with the
translation.
