Peggy,
Although the choice is a personal decision, I use the name "then" with
an additional notation of the "current" name. After all, twenty years
from now the name may change again and "today's" name would be really
irrelevant.

Searching: STEINWALTZ, London, 1933 #general

Julie Shepherd <shep02@...>

I realise that this is a long shot but .....

Yetta STEINWALTZ was found abandoned and wandering the streets of Stepney in
London in September 1933. She knew her name, her age and her birthday and
from this, the authorities found that she was the daughter of Jack and Annie
STEINWALTZ (nee ROSEN). At the time of her birth, 7 July, 1928, Jack &
Annie STEINWALTZ lived in London where Jack
had been a baker/journeyman.

The authorities were unable to trace Yetta's parents and eventually she was
sent to a children's home.

At the age of 10, Yetta was fostered by a woman she called simply "Auntie",
in Saltdean, East Sussex with whom she lived until Auntie's death in 1985.
Yetta, now aged 70, is living in a residential home in Saltdean where my
daughter is Head of Care.

Yetta has suffered >from mental health problems all her life and has no
memory of her parents. She is desperate to know where they are buried and
if she has any siblings.

This week I am hoping to check the GRO Indexes to see if I can find any
other STEINWALTZ's. Perhaps they were in the process of emigrating when
Yetta got lost.

Is anyone researching either the STEINWALTZ or ROSEN names? Has anyone got
any details on Jack or Annie?

Yetta would appreciate your help - if you can offer any clues, please email
me direct.

RAGAS Report #belarus

David M. Fox <fox@...>

Today I received volume IV, Number 4, Winter 1999, of the quarterly RAGAS
Report. For those not familiar with RAGAS it means Russian-American
Genealogicial Archival Source and is headed by Vlad Soshnikov, a frequent
contributor of AVOTAYNU articles. The RAGAS Report is not restricted to
Jewish research in Belarus. However, just about every issued has
information about Jewish research in Belarus. This issue has an article
on Jewish owners of businesses registered in Belarussian Districts
(Vileika, Lida, Oshmiany, Disna) of the former Volno Gubernia. This
article is based on information >from the 1897 All Russia (Vsya Rossiya)
Business Directory and list names and businesses.

Mr. Soshnikov has given me permission to republish some of his articles
from back issues of the RAGAS Report on the Belarus SIG website. I have
already scanned two of the articles. One lists sources available in
the Minsk archives and the other about sources in the Grodno archives.
Risa Heywood, our SIG webmaster, will be adding these to the website in
about two weeks.

I highly recommend that you subscribe to the RAGAS Report which is
written, edited and prepared by a volunteer staff. The primary cost is
for the printing and postage of four issues. Beinning with the Spring
1999 issue, they will continue to include more articles >from archival
sources, updates on conditions and research possibilities in the regional
achives of the FSU (including Minsk and Grodno), as well as lists of
names and records as they are uncovered.

To receive four 1999 issues, please send $15.00 to:

Mrs. Schochet and I visited Lithuania in October, 1993.

.We contacted Arunas Rokas with a company called "Litinterp." Their address is
Bernardiny 7-2, LT 2001, Vilnius. Their fax number is (370-2) 22 29 82. Their
phone numbers are (370-2) 22 38 50 and (370-2) 22 32 91. Mr. Rokas arranged
for a driver-interpreter and car for us at the time.

some things have changed. One example is the 75 year old telephone system has
been changed to digital - the latest technology. As a result, some of the

Vilnius is still the same. However, their fax number has been changed to
(370-2) 22 35 59. They also have added an office in Kaunas and in Klaipeda.
