Przerosl cemetery video
#poland
Hank Mishkoff
My fifth cousin Jonathan Misch (a Myszkowski descendant, like me)
visited Przerosl in June and recorded a video in the Jewish Cemetery there. I've posted the video on the home page of the project to restore the cemetery, which is at http://www.Przerosl.com/. Just follow that link and click on the video to view it. It's only 15 minutes long -- and like many tours of decaying Jewish cemeteries in Europe, it's both sad and fascinating at the same time. The cemetery does not appear to have been vandalized, but 75 years of neglect have left it looking more like a wooded lot than a cemetery. But having said that: Some headstones are still visible, and some of those appear to be legible. I say "appear to be" because I don't read ... Hebrew -- but if you do, and if you have family >from Przerosl, take a look, the video might hold some pleasant surprises for you. If you are able to translate any of the more-legible fragments, please let me know pprivately so as not to clutter up this discussion. Thank you!! Hank Mishkoff Hank@WebFeats.com

Dear All,
During the second half of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century, the mass wave of political prisoners were sent to Siberia. The majority of prisoners were educated people who were against the Tzar. By the early 20th century, some 300,000 people were sent to Siberia and some were Jews. By 1897, nearly 32,600 Jews, with their families, were living in Siberia. This number includes prisoners who decided to stay, with their families. Here is list of 30 Jews political prisoners who were sent to Siberia from Belarus:https://jhrgbelarus.wordpress.com/2016/08/06/list-of-jewish-political-prisoners- which-were-sent-to-siberia-19-beginning-of-20-century/ Yuri Dorn Coordinator of Jewish Heritage Research Group in Belarus www.jhrgbelarus.org

I have updated my Guide to Jewish genealogy in Latvia and Estonia and it is
now in ebook format. I must stress that this will be of use to researchers not only >from Latvia and Estonia but elsewhere in Eastern Europe. There is a brief chapter on Sources in the UK and with one click you can go to the National Archives. I have a brief Introduction to Genetic Genealogy and one on Social Media with links to sites with a more detailed explanation. This is the first ebook published by JGSGB (Jewish Genealogical Society Great Britain) who will benefit >from the sales. There are a few copies in print format but we wanted it to be mainly published as an ebook. The second edition of my Book was in 2006 and many telephone numbers and addresses of Archives have changed as well as Internet sites and email addresses which means that the second edition is now out of date. These have all been updated. There is information on Passports both Internal and External. The book contains the excellent chapter written by Nick Evans on Emigration detailing how our Ancestors got to other Countries >from Latvia always remembering that many Lithuanians may also have sailed >from Libau now Liepaja. THE URL is http://shop.jgsgb.org.uk/ The book is listed under featured publications and you can buy it for £5. You will receive am email giving you a username and password to access the site in the future and another email with download details. The book is in pdf format and easily navigable. Arlene Beare UK On my mother's side >from Lithuania and then Latvia Dorfman (born Birzai Lithuania and then lived in Riga) Scher/Blum(born Pandelys Lithuania and then lived in Riga) Berman (born Lygumai Lithuania and then lived in Jekabpils Latvia) On my father's side >from Poland Samuels - Benjamin and brother Joseph Poland possibly Krakow and Zychlin *** Moderator note: This is the one-time commercial announcement that JewishGen allows.

IAJGS Conference, ... and finally
#germany
Dear GerSIG Members
Oh my, how did that happen? We got to Monday morning and I've not had time to write anything about conference yet! The run up to conference has been very busy. We have more than 90 people identifying as members of our SIG who have signed up to be with us here in Seattle. We flew into Seattle direct >from London on Thursday, and by the time I started to recover >from the flight, on Friday, there were already quite a few conference attendees here at the hotel. We're conveniently located in downtown Seattle, not far >from the historic Pike Place market. The hotel is large, and other than the film festival, everything is on one floor, which means no need to wait in line for the elevator. Conference registration on Saturday evening worked smoothly and within only a few minutes there was a small gathering of GerSIG members catching up with life since we were all together in Jerusalem last year. Sunday morning we gathered again near Registration, and marked up the conference schedule to ensure we have all the GerSIG interest events in the agenda. Our table at the Share Fair was busy, and it was great to be able to hand out our little purple ribbons to GerSIG members, so we can all identify each other >from our badges. So now it's Monday, and the GerSIG crowd has taken over a table (near electric sockets of course) in the center of the hotel lobby, right in the middle of the conference meeting rooms. Several of us have been comparing family trees, others looking at DNA results, and the rest of us, we're preparing for the GerSIG business Meeting. We've also welcomed the GerSIG invited Guest Speaker, Stephen Falk to conference, and are eagerly anticipating his talks later this week,. This afternoon, we're looking forward to hearing and seeing Roger Lustig's talk about New Internet Resources for German-Jewish Research. He promises to post all the links he mentions to the GerSIG list once he's spoken, so everyone will get access to the information tomorrow or the day after. Tomorrow, we will hear Karen Franklin speak on The Obermayer German Jewish History Awards: A Resource for German Jewish Genealogists. More soon! B&F Encyclopedia of Jewish Genealogy with over 11,000 resources
#general
On my site B&F: Jewish Genealogy & More (https://bloodandfrogs.com),
there is now a new feature, which is called the B&F Encyclopedia of Jewish Genealogy. The encyclopedia has links to resources online covering 200+ countries and 80+ provinces, with over 1,200 resources. For Poland, there is additionally over 10,000 resources listed for roughly a thousand towns in the country. In addition to finding resources, users can also contribute resources they know about, to help other researchers. Users can also comment on resources, and share information, such as how they successfully used a resource to find out information about their family. To access the encyclopedia, go to: https://bloodandfrogs.com/encyclopedia and just click on a country to get started. Philip Trauring
