Romania. A sister (Rose) went to NY, married a Cohen and had a
duaghter (Florence)livinging in the Ctaskills as Florence Gale.
Another sister (name not known) went to Buenes Aires and had
a daughter named Felicia.

Also, I believe the real surname was Abromowitz until they

Thank you(s) - Gerts Given Name #general

Maria Krane

Hello Genners,
Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond to my post
regarding Gerts as a given name (>from 1858 revision list, Vegery, Lithuania).
Many of you suggested it may be a variation of Hirsh. However, Gerts'
father's name was Hirsh and was living so he wouldn't have been named after
his father. Someone kindly suggested that I obtain the original records to
see if something was lost in the translation. That is probably my best bet.
I appreciate the time everyone took to respond to me individually.

Lost it #general

sjkmb4@...

Someone had recently written the URL for the Morton Allen Book of Passenger
Ships arriving at NY and my computer lost it. Does anyone still have it?
Additionally, where would one look for ships prior to 1900?
Thanks Sherry Kamens

Given names Benjamin and Nastia #general

Pyotr@...

My great grandparents changed their names while living in either Poland or
Galicia in the late 1800's. Great grandfather changed his name >from Benjamin
NAGURNEY to Andrew NAGURNEY. great grandmother went >from Nastia
NAGURNEY to Anna NAGURNEY. I have no idea why. Does anyone know if this was
a common thing to do? If so Why? How common are the names Benjamin and Nastia
among the Jewish community, as opposed to Andrew and Anna? Any helpful speculation
is appreciated.

But perhaps your DANN was an abbreviation of a longer name based on the
common biblical name Daniel. (For instance, DANIELOVICH was the birth name
of Kirk Douglas!). There's also a surname DONIN or DANIN, which could
theoretically lose its "I" somewhere along the line, so it may be worth
checking these out too.
>>
Also DANINO, as in Rabbi Yehoshua Danino (the "Yad), author of Matnat Yad, a
discussion of the laws and customs of charity, who lived in Toledo, Spain in
the 13th century. Danino is quite a common name among Sfardim.

I very much doubt that ir comes >from Dan, son of Jacob. That name has been
relatively rare as a first name, perhaps non-existent as a family name, until
the Zionist revival. Danon, of the yogourt, is also a Sefardi family. Dunsky
is a promminent damily (I THINK a Dunsky was the head of the ILGWU (clothing
trade union), another was a South African industrialist prominent in that
country's Jewish community).

The possibilities are endless . . . .
