searching BLANKLEYDER/RUDO

allbell@...
I'm starting to look for information about ancestors of the RUDO family that
settled in the Baltimore area in the 1890s. The family may have originally come >from Kherson. My great-grandfather, Isidor RUDO, was born in 1888 and moved to the United States in 1903 to work as a cabinet-maker. He married a first cousin, Mary DUBIN. I'm also looking for information about members of the BLANKLEYDER family. My great-grandmother, Alte BLANKLEYDER, was born in the 1870s or 1880s and later married my great-grandfather, Sam SIVAK. The family changed its name to BELL when it moved to the United States around 1910. The BLANKLYDERs seem to have come >from Koden, Lublin, Poland, and the SIVAKs seem to have come from the Warsaw or Lomza area. A.L. Bell Oburubu, Guam

Holocaust and ancestors:Judy's message
#hungary
Stefano Groszy <steven@...>
Regarding Judy's message to Louis published on H-SIG in Febr.15, I agree
with her opinion on holocaust in Hungary and I'd like in this context to narrate the unusual way my father escaped Auschwitz, where most of his family perished, after deportation >from Mandok. Jozsef Grosz (1910-1989)came in 1926 to Italy - he had a far relative in Padova - to join the local college because italian fascism at that time had (yes) very liberal laws and encouraged foreign students to apply in several universities, no matter if gentles or Jews. Then Grosz established himself in Milano and found a good job. He was there in June 1940, in spite of 1938 antisemitic laws, whenever all the foreign Jews (...very important, only the foreign!) were immediately deported to Ferramonti, a southern italian camp. In July 1943 the anglo-american troops invaded Sicily and in a few days freed Ferramonti and my father was enrolled in the canadian army. Much different fate had the italian Jews! After June 1940 they were still free, all registered at the local police stations and virtually without any more right. Just after the allied troops invasion several german divisions were sent to Italy to combat the allied northern march. In September 1943 Italy was completely military occupied by Nazis and in 1944 - as in Hungary - all the Italian Jews were deported to Auschwitz and other camps: 8.000 died. Destiny is sometimes strange... Searching GROSZ, KLEIN, HEISZ, ROSENSTEIN. Regards, especially to Judy. Steven Grosz.

Lynn Golumbic <lynng@...>
I think this is a very noble idea. If it is done properly we may also be
able to cross reference other peoples lists for names which we may not have. I have about 150 names of relatives to contribute. Lynn Golumbic
