ETYMOLOGY of DANN
#general
Judith Romney Wegner
Subject: What is the etiology of the surname "Dann" I assume you mistyped -- you obviously meant to ask about its ETYMOLOGY.My mother's maiden name was "Dann" I am wondering what its etiology... The biblical Dan appears in Genesis as one of the sons of Jacob and thus the ancestor of one of the tribes of Israel. I know one family with the surname Dan (living in Israel, where this may be quite a common surname nowadays). But perhaps your DANN was an abbreviation of a longer name based on the common biblical name Daniel. (For instance, DANIELOVICH was the birth name of Kirk Douglas!). There's also a surname DONIN or DANIN, which could theoretically lose its "I" somewhere along the line, so it may be worth checking these out too. Judith Romney Wegner jrw@brown.edu

BEVIS MARKS
#general
Judith Romney Wegner
Jeff Malka asked:
There are printed lists of the records of the Marks-Bevis Spanish andFirst, you might want to note that this VERY famous synagogue is NOT called Marks-Bevis, but BEVIS MARKS. Actually, that's only its nickname -- being simply its street address! Officially, today, it's the "Spanish and Portuguese Jews Congregation" -- but everyone refers to it as Bevis Marks. Yes, it is still partially functioning, holding services at certain times, but more importantly it is a national monument supported by government funds and open to tourists at specified times. As for your questions, you could write to the archivist, a very helpful lady who will certainly know the answers: Ms. M. Rodrigues-Pereira, Honorary Archivist Spanish & Portuguese Jews' Congregation 2 Ashworth Road London W9 1JY United Kingdom Judith Romney Wegner jrw@brown.edu

How to Confirm Address for my Grandparents

Michael Rothenberg <mikeroth@...>
Hi,
I have an address that I would like to confirm as where my paternal grandparents lived, in Brooklyn, >from the 1930's into the 1950's. Where can I find a document that would show their name and address? Would a phone book >from that period be available somewhere? If yes, how could I (or someone) access it? Any other suggestions on other ways to connect the name with the address? (This was a house they owned in Coney Island). Thanks, Mike Rothenberg mikeroth@svpal.org

Subject: Question on London City Directories> I believe my grandfather was living in London England in 1901 and 1902.> What types of directories are available, and where would I be able toThere are some directories in an upstairs room at the Family Records Center, and many more at the London Metropolitan Archives -- both in Islington, just behind Finsbury Town Hall; nearest tubes (subway stations) are Angel or Farringdon No doubt there's loads more at the Public Record Office at Kew, a little further out >from central London. All three places are accessible by tube/ bus. When you get to London, call the FRC at 0181 392 5300, or the LMA at 0171 332 3820 for information and directions.
