I have only been able to find the Israeli Phone Book on the internet in Hebrew.
Do you know of an English version on-line?

How about we enter them for database searchs in a manner similar to the work
done by the JRI-Poland group. I cannot offer to lead but would be willing to
be a data entry person.

Emancipation #hungary

Magda Lapedus <Magdil@...>

To Tom Venetianer Jan 8.
I read a long chapter in the Encyclopedia Judaica, Volume He-Ir page
1090 about the emancipation of the Hungarian Jews between 1867-1914.
Eleanor Bien had asked about the reference of the Act of Emancipation
regarding requirement to adopt surnames. There was no mention about surname
adoption in the above chapter.

I believe that this happened during the reign of Joseph II. Emperor of Austria-Hungary.
He was the son of Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria. Joseph II. introduced
many reforms during his reign. He ordered the Jewish population to adopt
surnames. This was the main reason why Jews adopted German names.
Goldberg, Rosenberg, Gruenbaum etc.

Names of UJPEST martyrs. #hungary

Ujlaki Gyorgy <ujlaki.gyorgy@...>

According to the January 15, 1999 issue of -Uj Elet-, official organ of Hungarian
Federation of Jewrish Communities (MAZSIHISZ), the Museum of Hungarian
Jewry was given a list of UJPEST martyrs, which contain ca. 20 000 names.

It would be useful to make this list publicly available, for those of us who are
searching for relatives in Ujpest.

I am looking for Anna Tolnai, a painter, the sister of my paternal
grandmother, Elizbet. Anna lived in Budapest and was lover of a gentile man.
Both went to some concetration camp and died there. Thanks for any
information. Shalom, Sarah Achene

mod.- For those of you who may have needed evidence that censorship here is kept to a minimum, let the above message be that proof. I once walked by my wife's desk where a Danielle Steele book was left open to a page where the first sentence read "and she was the lover of a gentle man". LS

Meir Sas Book #hungary

Lebn@...

For those who live in the Wash. DC area, the book "Vanished Communities in
Hungary" by Meir Sas is available at the Library of Congress. The call number
is DS135.H92 Z467 1986 and can be called at the Main Reading Room. Phone the
Hebraic Section of the LOC first in case the book is located there, and if
not there, then put in a call slip at the Main Reading Room.
I use the LOC very often, if you want suggestions on how to get around the
HUGE complex, and save waiting time, e-mail me privately.

Proposal for Rumanian restitution #hungary

Ujlaki Gyorgy <ujlaki.gyorgy@...>

According to the January 15, 1999 issue of -Uj Elet-, official organ of Hungarian
Federation of Jewrish Communities (MAZSIHISZ), the Rumanian Prime Minister
submitted a draft law for compensation or restitution to be given for those, whose
property was confiscated between 1945-1989 in Rumania, incl. Transylvania.

Though this is not related to genealogy, might be of interest to some of us.

I am searching for ODON WURM, who was born in Hogyesz, Tolna county in
Hungary. He emigrated and settled I think in New York in the 1920ies. I learned
that his descendants came to Hungary a few years ago and they were searching
for relatives here. Unfortunately, we missed each other.

Any help or hint will be appreciated!

Presov #hungary

Magda Lapedus <Magdil@...>

Meg Power asked Jan 12. regarding Presov's German-speaking Jewish
community.

During the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy almost the entire Hungarian Jewish
population spoke German. This was especially true in the areas of present day Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Although there were
many ethnic groups in the area which before W.W.I. was called "greater Hungary", German was one of the main language in use at all times.
Presov (Eperjes) as we all know changed hands a number of times.
I didn't find in my search an indication that Presov (Eperjes) had a
"specific" German speaking community.

In the Encyclopedia Judaica there is a long reference about Presov. If you don't have any means to read the E. Judaica, I'll be glad to copy the relevant pages and forwarded it to your address.
