Governor Don SIEGELMAN (Alabama) #general

Dick Plotz

Does any Genner out there have any information on the ancestry of Alabama's
new Democratic Governor, Don Siegelman? I assume that if he were himself
Jewish, his election as governor of that Bible Belt state would have elicited
some comment in the press, but perhaps I'm wrong. Maybe his paternal ancestry
would be considered of less interest, though that certainly wasn't the case
with Barry Goldwater or William Cohen, for instance.

Thank you for your note

The person concerned is Igal Katzenellenboghen of Ein Shemer. He is aware
that I was going to e-mail you and I am also copying this note to him. He
is charming over the 'phone and seems extremely interested in - and
enthusiastic for - discovering his family genealogy. I leave it to you to
contact him direct and would appreciate your keeping me posted. His e-mail
address is: katzenel@...

Unfortunately, Igal's family cannot go very far back in their family
history, but he has very kindly provided me with various items of
information and, to get it all in one place, I'll now summarise what I have
on their branch.

They have a clear tradition of descent >from Saul WAHL (KATZENELLENBOGEN)
and earlier generations had a family tree, but this is now, apparently,
lost. The earliest ancestor they know is "Yekel" (Ya'akov)
KATZENELLENBOGEN who lived in Kovno and died there in 1924. I don't know
in which Yeshiva Yekel studied, but he was known as "Ha-iluy miKeidan",
Keidan in Lithuania having been his birthplace. He and, later, his many
sons were involved in the woven goods (cloth?) business. A section of the
fmaily remaine din Kovno, but others settled in Lodz during the jnter-WW
years as this was also, apparrently, a strong centre for their business
interests. Yekel's wife was caled Gittel. Names of their children
included Zalman, Avrohom Mordechai, Moshe Nochum, Fannie (Feige), Meir,
Hershel (Zvi?), Shimon, etc. This may be misleading, but the name female
"Fania" seems to occur a number of times in the family.

Do you have anything on K fmailies in Kaidan, Kovno or Lodz in your
database?

Finally, please note that I am changing my e-mail address during the course
of this week to: a.s.goldberg@... The CompuServe address will
terminate by the end of the month (year!). You will receive a standard
"Change of address" e-mail in the near future!

All the best

Abraham

Searching: SCHNIR, Uman to Buenos Aires, 1907 #general

Graciela Spivak <gspivak@...>

Hi,
I am searching for info on the ancestors of my maternal grandfather,
Gregorio (Grigori) SCHNIR. He emigrated >from Uman or a nearby shtetl to
Buenos Aires around 1907. His two older brothers, Mauricio (Moritz) and
Nujim (Nahum?) SCHNIR, arrived in Buenos Aires two years earlier.
Their father may have been a woods keeper in or near Uman; he remarried
after his first wife died and had two daughters; they did not emigrate.

Welcome Igal Katzenellenbogen to the Keidan email group! As many of us =
already know, the name Katzenellenbogen was one of the most famous, not =
only in Keidan but in all of Lithuania. Rabbi Yechezkel Katzenellenbogen =
(born in the 1660s) who founded a dynasty of religious leaders, served =
the town as chief rabbi, as did many of his descendents in later years. =
And one of them, (I believe it was David Katzenellenbogen) was =
responsible for bringing to Keidan the young prodigy who later grew up =
to become the Gaon of Vilna. The Gaon studied in Keidan's yeshiva and =
married the daughter of another local rabbi. For more on this, I =
recommend you read Berel Kagan's article about Keidan, which is on the =
Keidan website=20

Any additional genealogy or stories about the Katzenellenbogen family =
and their connection to Keidan would be most welcome on this list.

1905 New Jersey Census Question #general

Judith27

I would like to use the 1905 NJ Census to find a ZERMAN family which lived
on Union Street in Trenton at that time. However, when I initially went to look
at the specific microfilm for that locale, there were two entire rolls of
unindexed microfilm to scroll through for Trenton.
To help make this task more manageable, can anyone suggest how to find
out what ward Union Street, Trenton, Mercer County, would have been in on the
1905 NJ Census???
TIA,

Searching: SPIVAK, near Odessa, to Buenos Aires, 1907 #general

Graciela Spivak <gspivak@...>

HI,
I am searching for info on my GGparents.
They were Pinkos SPIVAK and Elke or Elka MALAMUD. They had 10 children:
Victor, Abraham, Moises, Dora, Dina, Etel, Rebeca, Jacobo, Ana, Melke.
Their names are spelled the way they figure in their Argentine documents,
since they all (except Pinkos, he died before they moved) emigrated to
Buenos Aires around 1907.
They lived in a small town near Odessa, I don't yet know the name.
Abraham, my Gfather, married Luisa (Leike) MIL and had at least one child
when they emigrated.
Victor, the oldest, was married to Tzipoire.

Re: "Americanized" birth certificates #general

Jonina Duker <jonina.duker@...>

My father is the youngest of ten and the only American born. He was
named Shloime Yehoshuah and his oldest sibling who had come first to
American with my grandfather went off to register the birth. She decided
that "Saul Jay" sounded better but didn't have the guts (for good reason)
to tell her parents what she had done. Non-Jewish children in the
neighborhood changed the Shloime to Shush which the extended family still
uses. It's time to apply to college and the august collegial institution
in the great state of Mass. demands a birth certificate. My father is
shocked to see that his name is not what he thought it was. An admirer
of Jonathan Jay he decides to merge the names and starts using Solomon
Jonathan Jay, then S. Jonathan Jay, then Jonathan Jay -- except of course
for a stint in the U.S. Army in which the papers say of course Saul Jay.
After the high school age discovery no one lost track of who was what
(although on occasion my mother wonders if they are legally married). As
a child I used to wonder how one would name after my father (in my family
secular language and Torah names match up so the answer of how to do it
and keep to the family traditions is not obvious.)

Today I received the German book "Anwalt ohne Recht" (Lawyer without
rights)(1998) about the Jewish lawyers of Berlin who were not allowed to
work under the Nazi regime. The list contains about 1500 names with
dates and places of birth, emigration information. Some pictures. Anyone
who is interested , please e-mail.
