Hi to all

I am searching for the HERZ family >from a town called Wloszczowa (vlo
cho va) in Poland.
All I know is that there were very famous rabbis >from that family.
(Famous is really a matter of geography and selective family memory :-)
)

Nottingham Hebrew Philanthropic Soc (UK) #general

Blaston <Blaston@...>

I have just learned that my G GF's cousin (Jacob KRAMRISCH) was
treasurer, president + founder member of the Nottingham Hebrew
Philanthropic Soc and served on the synagogue exec. committee in between
1882 and 1888. He subsequently held similar positions in Glasgow. Any
suggestions where I might find records/archives ?

thanks

"Lower East Side N.Y.C. Shtetl" #general

Howard Edson

Dear Jewish Genners,

We know that the early immigrants >from Russia came to the Lower East Side.
They would normally settle into groups of their fellow countrymen. I bring
this to my Jewish genners for this reason, my grandparents who arrived here
abt: July, 1891 settled into a tenement at 84 Monore St. and lived there
from 1896 to abt: 1915. What I find is that the 1900 and the 1910 Federal
Census', and the 1905 City Census show that more that 98% of the tenants
where >from Russia and almost all spoke Yiddish as their native tongue. Are
there any of you whose families where >from this tenement or near or around
it? I would like to see how many of you find that this holds true about
our families during that early period of time. I would love to hear your
feedback on this subject.
Thank you in advance,

A comment about names #general

judylab <judylab@...>

My mother, at the age of 2 or 3, came with her large family >from Tiszalok
in Hungary to McKeesport, PA. (McKeesport's Jewish population was largely
Hungarian). The four daughters in the Mandel family were Ruchel, Raizel,
Yenta and Genendel -- each of the daughters had these names until they
entered public school, where the teachers named them Ruth, Rose, Jane
and Annie. My mother (Raizel/Rose) often told of one teacher in the
school system who had a flair for the dramatic and the girls in her class
became Pamela, Valerie, Hortense and Beatrice as examples. Mother always
regretted that she didn't get that teacher and hence a less common name.

"How Did They Arrive in the U.S.A." #general

Howard Edson

Dear Jewish Genners,

My family emigrated here >from Russia about July, 1891 and entered the Port
of New York City barge office. (As you may know, Castle Garden was closed
on April 18, 1890 and Ellis Island did not open until January 1, 1892.)

At this point I am at a standstill because I am sure that the name must
have been changed >from the given family name. What I have established is
that this family became citizens of the U.S.A. in May of 1889. I have
copies of the citizenship papers, as well as copies of the 1900, 1910, and
1920 census. According to the facts that I have gathered the family
consisted of my Grandfather, his wife, and four children ranging in ages
4 to 11 years old. Five more children where born here.

What I am asking my fellow Jewish Genners is: How would this family have
traveled? What route to the U.S.A.? Would it have been by steerage or 1st
class steamship? I have searched the Hamburg and Berman manifest records,
both direct and indirect, and have not been able to identify or find any
records on this family. I worked forward >from July, 1891 and then
backwards. I have not been able to find any records.

Thank you in advance,
