Does anyone know if Afara or Ayfara is a Spanish or Portuguese Sephardi
forename (given name) for a woman? I've searched some of the Sephardi websites but found information only on surnames. Dolores Palomo Seattle

Has anyone heard of or have information on an organization called the Lena
Invalid Aid Society, Inc. They were an organization of women, primarily Jewish, who aided the "sick and poor" and held various social events. They formed in 1894 and were in existence over 50 years. My grandmother and great- grandmother were both active members and I am trying to get as much information or leads about this group as possible. Thanks. J. Newmark (chloe2000@aol.com)

AGordy@...
Hello Genners!
I am looking for Rene (AKA Rony) ARAB who, in the early and mid 1950's had a watch business on Rue Mouski in Cairo. In 1950 he was about 21 years old. I am pretty sure he left Egypt but have been unable to locate him and have not much to go by. Moreover, he may have changed his name! Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you for your thoughts on this. Antoinette (Toni) Rechter Gordy Pleasant Hill, California Searching: RECHTER >from Skole (formerly Galicia; KLUGER >from Krakow; HAKKER >from Amsterdam

Hello Genners, I found this on a website for Sephardic Genealogy. I don't know how useful it'll be to anyone but you may want to check it out. They are form letters in different languages requesting genealogy information to archives. There's one letter in Latvian. Perhaps someone who has a command of Latvian can look at the letter and tell us if it is any good. Sincerely, Maria Krane Researching: KREIN/KREYN/SCHULDNER in Vegeriai, Lithuania HOFFMAN/KATZ/REMER in Salakas, Lithuania and HOFFMAN in Svir, Belarus

Help w/Russian Given Names and HOFFMAN
#general
Maria Krane
Hello Genners,
I recently added another given name to my husband's family tree. The name is Novtel. I had never seen or heard of it before. I looked in several sources and have been unable to figure out if it was a common name at the time or its meaning. This name was used in the early part of the 1800's in Lithuania. Another name is Shlioma. Shlioma I did find in Boris Feldblyum's book. Is this a derivation of Shlomo? The book said Shlioma and then included Godayl' in parenthesis. (?) I didn't know what to make of that. And lastly, how about the surname Hoffman. Since the letter H doesn't exist in the Cyrillic alphabet does that mean that Hoffman may be Goffman? Or could it be a bastardization (sp?) of the name Rochman (or Rachman). I'd appreciate any help you can give me. Sincerely, Maria Krane researching: KREIN/KREYN/SCHULDNER Vegeriai, SCHULDNER Zagare, REMER/HOFFMAN in Salakas (all in Lithuania) and HOFFMAN in Svir, Belarus

Searching: DEUTSCH, Beregszas (Hungary)?
#general
Ellie & Marv <elmar@...>
This is an act of desperation. After several years I still have not
been able to verify the town in Hungary that my DEUTSCH family came from. I believe it was Beregszas. If anyone sees anything at all familiar I would appreciate hearing >from you privately. Louis DEUTSCH m Rosa SCHWARTZ in Hungary around 1860 Nathan DEUTSCH (b Hungary 1865) m Esther KLEIN in NYC in 1892 - Nathan owned a bedding store I believe in Brooklyn and also lived in Bklyn the latter part of his life. He died in the early 1930's. In 1900 he and his family lived at 21 Ave. B, Manhattan. They had 5 children: Joseph, Eddie, Sadie, Lily & Harry. Adolph DEUTSCH (b Hungary 1872) m Tpni (TILLIE) KAUFMANN in NYC around 1891. Adolph was in the wholesale fur business most of his life as were his three sons. He also lived in Brooklyn the latter part of his life. In 1920 he and his family lived at 556-60 Green Ave., Bklyn. . Around 1892 he , his wife and oldest daughter lived at 134 Ave. D in Manhattan. In 1903 they lived at 322 E 8th St., Manhattan. They had six children: Mary, Jacob, Helen, Morris, Lily & Harry. Adolph died in 1935. They all belonged to the First Bklyn. Hungarian Aid society. I believe there was at least one other brother whose name might have been Isidore. He also came to the United States. Does any of this mean anything to anybody? Ellie Reben

Abraham STERLING and Nottinghill Shul, London
#general
jsfriedman@...
I just learned that my gg-uncle, Abraham STERLING, was a founding member
of the Nottinghill Shul somewhere in London, England. Does anyone know how to proceed in obtaining information about him >from the Shul or other related organization (address, phone, contact name, etc.)? Abraham a.k.a Abram STERLING was married to Rachel (or Ruth) GORDON. Abraham married two sisters. He married his second wife, Rachel, after her sister (name unknown) died. He had several children, Ada, Rebecca, Rose, and Louis, then Mary/Stella, Lillian, Daisy, and Jessie. I am in contact with some of his direct descendants, but no one seems to remember when or where he was married or died. I'd appreciate any information you may have on the Nottinghill Shul or on Abraham STERLING himself. Please reply privately. Thanks in advance, Jack Sterling Friedman Seal Beach, CA MODERATOR NOTE: Please consult the Discussion Group Archives at our website for some information around this topic.
