Searching GOMETZ family, Brest Litovsk, around 1880

Dear Jewishgenners,
This is my first attempt at a search for members of the GOMETZ family. I have four different spellings: CHUMEC, CHOMETZ, CHOMITZ and GOMETZ. The family came >from Brest Litovsk. The earliest names that I have are Arye Leib CHUMEC, married to Pascha KAUMNAN. They had eleven children: Gittel, Esther,Nachuma, Menicheh, Dineh, Leah, Froikeh, David, Avrum, Morris, and Beryl. Beryl had a son named Aron (Aaron) who died in 1988 in Canada. David had a son named Asher who lived in Israel. Froikeh came to the United States and lived in Cleveland, Ohio. He married Kaleh and had four children, Rose, Bertha, Mary and Harry. Esther went to London, England and married Israel ISENSTEIN. They had five children, Betty, Manny, Joe, Rose, and Anne. I am in touch with Esther's family. Avrum had a son Mendel who married Sarah. They lived = in Philadelphia, PA. They had two sons, Morris and David. Mendel and = Sarah lived in Florida during the 1960s, I believe. Sarah died in = Florida in 1966. Their son Morris had three children, Ken, Martha, and = Jonathan. Gittel GOMETZ, who is my pateranl grandmother, married Yitzah = BLECHER. They had five children, Sol, Abe, Ben, Esther, and Morris. Ben = Blecher was my father. He wanted me to try and trace the family. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Eileen Price Denver, Colorado

Help with deciphering a photo
#general
Foodphile@...
I have a photo of my grandmother and her family which I believe was taken in
the Ukraine around 1902. I was wondering if anyone knows of a company or private person who specializes in deciphering old photos? There is an object on the floor that I cannot figure out at all. Also, everyone is dressed in what appears to be, very fine clothing.....strange to me because I think the family was very poor. I wonder if photography studios provided clothing for their photo shoots? I would appreciate any feedback you may have. Thanks very much. Meryl Persky Searching: DUNITZ (DUNETZ) Kovel, Russia, SALTZMAN Kovel, Russia, KETCHMAN Ukraine, KELLNER Oustra-Polia, SUBMAN Oustra-Polia, HIRSCH (HIRSH) Grybow, Galicia, LEDER (LEDERER) Ryglic, Galicia, GOLD Galicia, SHEIER Galicia, SPERBER Galicia

Searching: MENDLOWTIZ
#general
The2thdkdr@...
I recently discovered the maiden name of my paternal, great, grandmother. Her
name was Regina (Rifke) Mendlowitz. She lived and died in Zemplen County, now part of Slovakia. Relatives of hers, eventually emigrated to the U.S. One was Louis Mendlowitz. He had two sons, Jack and Ernest Mendlowitz. At one point they lived in Lakewood, New Jersey. I am trying to locate Jack or Ernest who should be about 70 years old now. I find no evidence of them living in Lakewood anymore. Wayne Roth, Brooklyn, New York

trying to find a child hidden during WWII under a false
#general
Jonina Duker <jonina.duker@...>
In 1990 or 1991 there was an article in the Wall Street Journal about
the problem of children hidden during the war under other identities, and the adoptive parents not disclosing that fact to the children and some of these children realizing after the adoptive parents' death (for all sorts of reasons but such realizations were, unfortunately, not always accompanied with the information that provided identity.) By coincidence, I had just met Eugene Fisher (exact title and organization escapes me) who is a Roman Catholic theologian. When I provided the WSJ article he wrote to the church in Poland, and the final upshot, per my recollection, was that the Roman Catholic Church in Poland would cooperate with searches for hidden children before it is too late. I did pass this correspondence on to ADL in NY (in US, ADL took the lead in hidden children efforts -- in part because the head of ADL was himself a hidden child). Is it possible to enlist the cooperation of the local Roman Catholic authorities to approach the authorities in Poland? (or did you try that long ago without success?) Jonina Duker

Searching: KARFINKEL, Naleczow or Kotsk, Poland
#general
DHamme5773@...
My father, Isaak Karfinkel, was a Holocaust survivor, born in Naleczow (or
Kotsk)! In 1907 (or 1905)! He alone survived, >from a family circle of some 90 people. He never found a relative until his death in 1994. I have found variations of the name, but none >from Naleczow/Kotsk, on the JGFF. Other family names were his mother, Pesa WEICHLEDER, >from Skierniewiece, and an aunt, Matl CENDLER, in Lomza. He had been married in 1927 to Franya KIRSCHENBLATT in Sosnowiece, where they lived up to the war; she and their three children perished in the Holocaust, presumably at Auschwitz. Yad Vashem has no record of any of these people, but did send me a copy of an index card on my father >from the IRC (I had written to both these sources years ago, before the Internet, with no results at all.) I fear that, not only have all these relatives died, but there is no trace of them anywhere. If anyone has knowledge of any of these names, I would be grateful to hear >from them. << In order to evaluate the validity of ages as reported on passenger ships' manifests, I wonder what factors may have been operant during the late 19th and early 20th centuries (such as fare structures, government regulations, etc.) that may have led immigrants to falsify their ages.>> My father arrived NY, USA around 1887 or 1888 >from the port of Antwerp, Belgium. He was 12 years old, traveled alone, no family or friends, spoke no English, only Yiddish, possibly Russian or Ukranian. The only thing that makes any difference is that the Baron DeHirsh of Belgium arranged for ship passage for any Jewish people wanting to emmigrate to USA and that might have made a difference to the regulations. Do you know whether the ships manifest listed passengers by original surname or did they concoct a new name that they could write or print? If a new name was listed, how can I find out the original, and if they used the original, how can I find out what it was? Am currently waiting for a government form to access passenger lists >from that period. Nathan Louis Greenberg San Diego, CA
