Dear H-siggers,

Frankly I don't know how to direct this proposition in an appropriate
manner. Our striving moderator suggested a couple of things which then
triggered this letter.

Anyway, let me begin >from the beginning :-)

I just completed a bulky family history book. It contains my family's tree,
important documents, accounts of familiar events and funny stories,
reproductions of old photos and alike. It also contains my memories about
the terrible WWII years, what my family and I endured while in
concentration camps and the sad destiny of many of my dearest relatives.
This work of much love was written to pass to my descendants the rich
heritage of Judaism and also the moral/ethical teachings of my parents and
relatives. It took me 7 months to complete, having been *written in
Portuguese*. On New Year's eve we had a big family party along which I gave
a copy to my sole two daughters, recommending that they should pass it to
their descendants.

Louis learned about this through JewishGen. We exchanged a few mails in
which an idea crystallized - if a sufficient number of members would be
interested in reading my personal experience of the Shoah, I would
translate that portion of my family history book into English. I proposed
not to charge for the copies, instead asking those interested to make a
donation to any Holocaust survivors association.

Louis offered a much better idea: instead of an open donation, why not
channel this money to the project suggested by Gyorgy Ujlaki (building the
online data bank of the over 600,000 Hungarian martyrs of the Shoah). I
embraced his proposition immediately as I find Gyorgy's project fantastic.
I do realize that even if volunteer work will be available for collecting
names, such an enormous project will demand money.

Therefor here is the deal: If I can collect a sufficiently large number of
interested members willing to get a copy of my memories (suggested retail
price of USD 60), I am more then willing to embark on making the
translation, maybe an amplification of what I already wrote. The amount
collected will be used to pay for mailing and reproduction (maybe it can be
done in the US cheaper), the rest going to funding Gyorgy Ujlaki's project.

Please reply to me in private. Lets check if we have a critical mass to
deploy this project. Be aware that I was in Sered and Terezin, I was 7
years old only, so my story is much centered about those two places in
Slovakia and limited to the remembrances of a 7 years old boy.

is, I believe, still lit mainly by candlelight with primitive, sparse
seating and a lot of standing room.

In Baltimore, there are several rather large cemetery plots which have
divisions owned by various groups. These groups take care of the
burials of people associated with those organizations. These
organizations are shuls, societies, landsmenshaften, and so on. This
is what you have discovered there.
