Found - a US relative #general

David Aron <davidaron@...>

A few months ago I started to trace some of my relatives who had gone from
Berlin to Altanta, Georgia. I quite soon found my great aunt and her
daughter in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) which is a great
service. However my great aunt had another daughter who was not listed on
the SSDI. I asked the group how to proceed and a number of people responded
with suggesting that I try to obtain the death certificates.

I first obtained my great aunt's certificate and that gave the address of
the informant being her oldest daughter. >from this I was able to establish
that this daughter although still in Georgia did not live in Atlanta. This
allowed me to obtain her death certificate which arrived last week. I
noticed that a doctor was shown as having identified the body but it was
only having read the certificate that I realised that he was described as
being her brother-in-law. I looked up his name in the US telephone lists
and called. After being given information that the number had changed I
rang the new number and got right through to my great aunt's daughter
Steffi.

Steffi is a bright 75 year old married with children and grandchildren. She
had gone to the US via the UK and had been internned as an enemy alien
along with her mother and sister on the Isle of Man in 1940-1941. She had
also met my parents during the war in Birmingham before I was born. She
remembered very distinctly being in my grandparents' house in Berlin
listening as a child to Hitler's broadcast when he became Chancellor and
although not understanding what was happening knowing that it was not good.

I think the best thing was getting in touch with my uncle in Australia who
then called Steffi. They had known each well in Berlin and had not spoken
to each other for more than 60 years! Steffi and her husband by a
co-incidence had already planned a trip to England in August and we shall
be able to meet them then.

I would like to thank all of those people who gave me helpful tips on the
way!

Dutch Settlement in the Caribbean #general

eshel <dreshel@...>

Valeria Lempert asked about Dutch/Jewish settlement in the Caribbean.
Maybe Curacao
Jews came to Curacao with the Dutch in the l650s - Sephardim - Spanish and
Portuguese Jews >from Brazil, Amsterdam, Portugal ,Bayonne and other places,
encouraged by the Dutch West India Company. They were mainly merchants,
experienced in colonial trade and with wide expertise in international
commerce, who were much sought after to serve as intermediaries between
the colonial authorities - in the Dutch and English colonies of the
Caribbean - and the local population of the American continent. On Curacao
many Jews were involved in the shipping trade and were active in the
manufacture and marketing of sugar.

Resource: Migration from the Russian Empire (available?) #general

Maria Krane

Hello Genners,
I was recently reading an article in Avotaynu (Fall 1998) by Edward
David Luft, titled "A Tip for Locating Pre-1906 Immigrants to the United
States." One of the sources it mentions is Migration >from the Russian Empire.
However, it doesn't state where it is available. Is this something that is
available at libraries? Can it be obtained >from the LDS? I'd appreciate some
direction. Many thanks.

As a matter of fact, there was a major family "reunion" in Cuacao in February
for some of the descendants of those Jewish settlers (>from Amsterdam
originally) spread around the world. My husband is related, but did not
attend.

Family finder limitations #general

diane goldman <dgoldman@...>

Don't forget: the Family Finder (JGFF) is only as comprehensive as our
contributions make it. The most likely answer for the question below is
that noone has (yet) contributed a query about Mezhyrov.

I assume the search below was done using the Daitch-Mokotoff Soundex,
checking for other spellings of the town name.

. . . I'm looking for information about Mezhyrov, near Vinnitsa
(49.05/28.01) and wondering why I cannot find it on JGFF?

Antopol: Poland, Belarus, or Ukraine? #general

Dolph Klein <kledolph@...>

In Martin Gilbert's book, "The Holocaust", he mentions on page 424, "one
thousand [Jews had been murdered] at Antopol. According to the index of the
book, the mass murder occurred in 1942, but Gilbert did not give the
country location of Antopol. ShtetlSeeker lists five towns with the name,
Antopol; two in Poland, one in Belarus and three in Ukraine.

According to a Martyrs and Heroes record at Yad Vashem, my aunt, BERTA
ADLER nee KLEIN and her two daughters, YANKA and JULIA, were killed in
Antopol Ghetto in 1942, but the name of the country was not given. Their
last known address prior to deportation was in Piestany, Slovakia . On 27
March 1942, they were put on Transport #19, along with 1,251 Jews, and
transported >from Nove Mesto nad Vahom, Slovakia to Naselov (Poland?).

In which of the towns of Antopol were my relatives likely to have been
prior to their demise? Are there records and/or accounts >from this ghetto
in existence?

Miami Jewish News #general

A. E. Jordan

In a recent message someone mentioned the Miami Jewish News. Anyone know
anything about this publicaion like how long it has been around and does it
publish a lot of obits?

I have several family members who died in the Miami area and I tried looking
for them in the Herald. Unlike New York where paid obits in the New York
Times seem common in Miami I did not find obits.

Any thoughts on how to find Miami obits for family members who were not celbs
and would not have gotten a large article?

Thanks.
