Re: Anglo-Jewish family announcements #general

Judith Romney Wegner

Does anyone know of an archive in UK in which family announcements are kept,
such as where families announced births, marriages and deaths in the local
(Jewish) periodicals?
Ko Sturkop
Yes. B/M/D announcements have appeared weekly on the "Social and
Personal" page the Jewish Chronicle, almost (though I think not quite)
since its founding in 1841. It's my understanding that someone (sorry, I
forget who it is) is currently computerising these and will be soon be
publishing a book on them.

When I was a kid, we used to refer to this page as the "hatches, matches
and dispatches."

It should definitely be on his SS-5, the application for a Social Security
number... assuming he knew the information, and assuming the full record is
still available. Based on what you wrote, I assume he was alive and still
working when Social Security started.

"copple" (kappel) = yarmulke #general

Judith Romney Wegner

My British cousin tells me that my Great-Great grandfather wore a white
"copple" in Romania in the 1860's. ...
Mike Karsen
Your British cousin is using nothing more nor less than the standard
Anglo-jewish term for yarmulke!
"Copple" (as he apparently spelled it, reflecting Anglo-Yiddish
pronunciation) is normally spelled "kappel," which is German for "little
cap" -- and is such standard usage in Anglo-Yiddish that I never even
HEARD the word yarmulke before coming to the USA at age 24! I assume that
the use of kappel in England reflects western European (German) Jewish
vocabulary as opposed to yarmulke -- which is some kind of slavic word and
reflects east European Jewish vocabulary.

Because the overwhelming majority of American Jews came >from Eastern
Europe, American Yiddish reflects that fact. I NEVER heard any American
Jew say "kappel" (though many nowadays use the Hebrew word "kippah" --
which, ironically, is a mishnaic term for a WOMAN's headgear -- see Mishnah
Ketubbot 5:8).

I sometimes think that English and American Jews, like the English and
Americans in general, are a people divided by a common language!

Sometimes Persistance Pays! #general

Ricki L. Zunk <rickiz@...>

I have been trying to find information about my mother's mother's
mother's family who live and lived in and around Toronto, Canada. Over
the past two years I've written, phone, faxed, and emailed everyone I
could find to try to get me the answers I so sorely needed about this
part of my LEVINE/LEVINSKY family.

TODAY, I finally received a written letter >from the woman who "held the
keys to my kingdom" for all these years. I now know the names, dates,
and places for all the family members who live/lived in Canada. Now, I
can truly begin to put the puzzle pieces together. I still have LOTS of
questions, but now I know just where to point them and what, exactly, I
need to ask.

SO, for those of you who have just about given up in your quest for
information >from family members you know can help, but haven't -- take
heart. Perhaps with a little more nudging >from you, they'll finally
relent and help you out.

Good Luck to all,
Ricki Randall Zunk

My husband's gm Esther RHEINGOLD was married to Isadore KAMINSKY. I am
searching for Bernard and ?Sara GOLUB formerly >from Wantaque, Long Island
who moved to Florida, possibly Hallendale. Sara(?) was a RHEINGOLD and the
only link I have to getting any information on that branch of the family as
Esther and Isadore are deceased and my mil is of no help. I tried the white

Why would a Polish Yid travel to England? #general

Jenny Jackson <jenny@...>

My g-grandfather apparently died in London in 1896. He was born and lived
in Kutno, Poland, where indeed his son was born in 1892. He was listed as a
labourer by trade. Why would he have gone to England and how? Does anyone
else have a story like this in their family, particularly >from that time? I
am looking for a likely explanation.

Researching: JAKUBOWICZ (Kutno), KRENIG (Kutno), KAJZERLAND (Kutno), FALC
(Kutno), JUDKIEWICZ/JUDKOWICZ (Belchatow), LAJB (Belchatow), UNGLIK
(Belchatow), ZELIK (Belchatow)

Re: "Roots" trip to Poland #general

Rita Nash <rivke@...>

Hank Mishkoff mentioned the possibility of a trip to Bialystok etc.
Anyone contemplating such a journey should read "Jewels and Ashes" by
Arnold Zable, a Melbourne writer who made such a trip and recorded it in
a moving and literary manner. He made the journey wihout booking hotels
etc, relying on whatever came along. In this way he was able to
interact with locals in a much freer way. He chronicles the journey
as a search for his own roots in particular as well as the Jews of the
area in general. Highly recommended. If you can't find it,
contact me.

My great-grandfather, Morris HIRSCH, was a member of a New York based Romanian
Vasluier Fraternal Association. I am interested in knowing whether any other

find out more information about it. Morris' father was Gershon Hirskovitz.
He may have been a member too. Thanks in advance for your help!
