Searching: GOLDBERG / VALTUKH; Odessa, UKR; c. 1900 #general

DA Walters <dwdwone@...>

I am looking for Goldbergs/Goldenbergs or Waltucks/Valtukhs that may be
related. My family immigrated >from Odessa, Ukraine in the early 1900's
through Ellis Island.

On my Father's birth certificate it lists his parents as being Devenish
citizens, does anyone know what that means?

I have sent out over 2500 e-mails in recent months and have not come up
with a single connection to my Goldberg family. Please pass this note and
my web page address on to any Goldbergs you may know as it could be the
link to connect our families, I'm hoping that networking might be the
answer.

Please check out my web page at
http://mypage.direct.ca/d/dwdwone/index.html

Please feel free to leave your name and info in my guestbook, you never
know, it may turn out to be a link for you.

Have a wonderful week

Shalom
DA Walters

Searching: Owner of Polish Newspaper in Warsaw #general

Michael Trapunsky <mtrap@...>

Hi all,

I'm trying to locate any information on my grandfather's 1st cousin who
lived in Warsaw. Unfortunately I have very little information to go on. All
I know is that she was the daughter of Reuven Chaim and Sarah (?)
Goldstein, and her first name may have been Esther. Esther's (?) husband
was a part owner of a Polish newspaper that was published in Warsaw. The
other owner(s) was a non Jew.

If anyone knows of this family, or can point me in the right direction, I
would love to hear >from you.

Thanks very much.

Hirsch/Hershel/Zvi/ Naphtali Herz. #general

Judith Romney Wegner

Was Hersch (or Herschel) and Hertz (or Hertzel) basically the same
name?

I have found Hersch defined as deer, while Herz is defined as heart.
Yet I have seen both names associated with:

(1) the Herbrew name for deer: Zvi, Tsvi or Tsui,
(2) the biblical name Naphthali
(3) and the American and British names Harris, Harry or Harold,
Yes, all of the above is true, including the existence of the combination
combination Naphtali-Herz (the most famous "Naphtali Herz" being,
undoubtedly, Naphtali Herz Imber -- the poet who wrote the words of
HaTikvah, the Zionist anthem that became the national anthem of the State
of Israel.)

Note, though, that your question is not one of "definition" but of simple
"translation." Hirsch is the German word for deer and Herz is German for
heart; so deer is the TRANSLATION of Hirsch and heart is the TRANSLATION
of Herz. Therefore Zvi Hirsch is a common combination, which makes sense,
since both words mean deer.

Naphtali Tzvi (or Naphtali Hirsch) makes good sense also, because in the
Blessing of Jacob, he blesses his son Naphtali by comparing him to a deer
(Gen. 49:21). However, the odd thimg is that he actually calls Naphtali
an "ayalah" (which is a hind, or FEMALE deer!). The verse says: "Naphtali
is a hind let loose, which yields lovely fawns." (New JPS translation).
But Naphtali Ayalah would have been a weird combination for a boy's (or a
girl's) name -- so it became Naphtali Zvi, and in Yiddish Naphtali Hirsch.

Naphtali Herz, by contrast, raises a problem; it makes no particular sense
-- if we think of Herz as meaning only "heart" amd nothing else. But I am
betting that the medieval German word for a deer may also have been spelled
"Herz" certainly the "middle English" word for a male deer has a very
similar spelling, namely, "Hert" (which later became "Hart").

So the notion that the "Herz" component in the name Naphtali-Herz
represents "heart" is almost certainly mistaken; while the notion that
Hirsch/Hershel = Herz/Herzl is certainly correct, as long as we understand
that in this case Herz is simply another spelling for a male deer.

The following is a message >from Israel Pickholtz and is a wonderful idea.
How do we go about getting this implemented? I'm sure my brother would be
willing to get this information >from his shul in Queens and perhaps call
around to some of his friends in some of the other boroughs. This would be
a definite boon to all genealogists.

Is there anyone out there >from Bridgeport, CT? Do you know if the "Big
Shul" on Washington Ave. is still open? That shul would have years of
Yiskor history going way back.

What do the rest of the JG subscribers/staff think?

I don't know if this is of any help or not, but I found my grandmother's

all states do or did this or if it was done only in Conn. back in 1909.

I've just been told that all marriage licenses in my grandfather's native
village were destroyed, so I can't get my great-grandmother's maiden name
from the Ukranian archives. Can someone tell me, would my immigrant
grandfather have listed his mom's maiden name on his application for Social
Security, his request for U.S. citizenship, or any other American document
that might be available to me?
