Re: Bios of Manhattan judges

Davesap@...
There are two sources that I know of to find at least some basic information.
The first is called The American Bench which comes out every year I believe. The second is Martindale-Hubbell which has a listing of all the lawyers in the United States and many internationally. Both of these should be available at any law school library and many public libraries in the United States. In Israel, I would try one of the law school libraries. -- David Saperstein

You are correct. I too am in Jerusalem and there certainly has not been an
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
English phone book in the last few years. That one was sort of a fiasco as they attempted to list first names separately but forgot to remove the vav tying the names of family members together eg. the usual Cohen, Reuven v'Sara. So they had a long list of first names beginning with the vav - v'Sara. Reuven Singer
Sorry, but I live in Jerusalem and I haven't seen an English phone book

Dear Stuart: I see you had some success with Yad Vashem. I too had a similar experience regarding the names on the list. Moshe Tuchman was a member of the Kartuz Bereza Organization in Israel that apparently assembled the 4500 or so names to submit to Yad Vashem. I suspect he listed himself as a relative so that these names could be accepted. I also attempted to contact him this summer, but was told by Chaim Ben-Israel, who heads the organization, that he unfortunately passed away several months ago. Mr. Ben-Israel did put me in contact with a woman who was a friend of a family member of mine in Bereza, who despite her age, was able to confirm the family connections I had put together >from the Yad Vashem lists. I would try to contact Mr. Ben Israel in Israel. They are glad to help and are grateful that people show an interest in their town since it no longer exists as a Jewish community. I would also attempt to locate the Memorial Book they published in 1993. Joe Ross, Philadelphia Searching: BUCHALTER, ROSENFARB, KAPLAN-Kartuz Bereza, Selets, Malech

Has anyone requested any information >from this census? Before I send aUK cencus' are not made public until 100 years have elapsed. They are taken every 10 years. The 1891 census is the most recent one that you can research. The 1901 census will be made public in 2001. So I would not waste your time requesting information on the 1901 census just yet. I have just learned that my G GF's cousin (Jacob KRAMRISCH) was
treasurer, president + founder member of the Nottingham Hebrew Philanthropic Soc and served on the synagogue exec. committee in between 1882 and 1888. He subsequently held similar positions in Glasgow. Any suggestions where I might find records/archives ? thanks Irene Blaston blaston@compuserve.com Searching: KRAMRISCH - Brody, Ukraine and Vienna.
