1910 US Census Index for Phila. at the Carnegie Lib. of Pittsburgh #general

Matthew Meisel <mattmeisel@...>

To all Genners who live in Pittsburgh, PA, or who plan to do research
there:

A while back I submitted a question about the 1910 US Census Index of
Philadelphia, PA. Thanks to all who responded. I found the rolls of
microfilm at my local library, the Carnegie of Pittsburgh.
At the Carnegie, the rolls of microfilm of the index are in the first
bank of microfilms in the microfilm room. If you have trouble finding
them, ask the microfilm librarian to show you rolls 529 to 688. Some of
the genealogy librarians at the Carnegie don't know the rolls exist.

It is good to see good scientific investigative techniques applied to

Book - Chaia Sonia #lithuania

Howard Margol

I have just received the following book; "CHAIA SONIA, A family's odyssey
Russian style", by Don Gussow. It is the story of Don Gussow's mother,
growing up in Pumpian (Pumpenai) Lithuania before World War I, the trials and
tribulations of being forced to move East within 24 hours or face being shot,
and the rest of Chaia's odyssey with her family. The book is very interesting
and one gets a very good feel for shtetl life during those times.

The book was originally published in 1980 and has long since been out of
print. I ordered it online >from <www.amazon.com> on January 4, 1999 and
received it yesterday, January 19th. The cost was $15.99 plus $3.95 shipping
and handling or, a total of $19.94. This was for the hard cover. The paper
back copy would have been $3.00 cheaper but was not available. Frankly, for
$3.00, I think the hard cover is well worth the difference. You probably could
order the book >from your local Barnes & Noble or other local book store if you
prefer not to order through the internet.

Al Jolson #lithuania

Harv1998@...

I once heard a rumour re Al Jolson and Keidan, and I have just consulted:

"The Story of Al Jolson" by Michael Freedland (1972)(pp6-8)

Jolson's family, called Yoelson, came >from the shtetl of Srednicke, Lithuania.
His father was Cantor Moses Yoelson. As a young and aspiring cantor, Moses
went to stay with an uncle in the "big town" of Keidan - "It was so big that
it contained 500 houses!"

It was in Keidan, at an audition for the High Holy Days services, that Moses
met his future wife, Naomi, daughter of Reb Asa Cantor, whom he soon married.
Not long after, they moved back to Srednicke.

So another claim to fame! - Al Jolson's mother was Naomi Cantor >from Keidan.

best wishes >from Glasgow, Scotland

mod.- this is obviously a message directed towards one individual (and would normally be returned to the sender who would have been asked to send it to that individual(s) and not the entire group). However, I am aware of an extensive family tree on this Frankel family orginally prepared by Harry Frankel in the 1930s and subsequently expanded by Harry Gross of New York and Paul Klein of Cleveland, Ohio. This posting gives me an opportunity to make this information available to a wider audience who might benefit >from further inquiry. re Kasztner #hungary

Judy Young and Arthur Drache <jy-abcd@...>

This is with reference to Magda Lapedus' recent posting (and Margalit's
before that). There is also a brief description on the Kasztner project to
save Jews in Raul Hilberg's The Destruction of the European Jews, which is
perhaps more readily available than Braham's book. It can be found in the
chapter on Hungary. Apparently Kasztner had prepared a report on this at the
end of the war. It is entitled "Der Bericht des juedischen Rettungskomittees
aus Budapest 1942-45" . ("Report of the Budapest Committee to Rescue Jews
1942-45") It is hard to find but there is a copy in the Library of
Congress.

I signed up to this list recently and have not posted anything before but
follow the items with interest.

I noted the item about the Jewish Museum recently and looked up the website.
It is obviously still under construction. The keywords on the home page
are: Fooldal = home page; Muzeum= obviously museum; leveltar= archives;
keptar= pictorial archives; kiadvanyok=publications; linkek= links, and the
e-mail address.

I do speak Hungarian, visited the Museum this past November, and am happy to
help anyone with translating the Hungarian on the site. We should probably
ask them to put a bit of English on there as soon as they can.
