Family of the Chofetz Chaim

Don Gallard <dg2286@...>
I am looking for information or sources of information on the family of
the Chofetz Chaim. I have just verified that a member of one of the families I am researching, ROITBLAT, married a niece of the Chofetz Chaim, specifically, Rabbi Mordechai Ber ROITBLAT, aka Mordechai Ber BERDITCHEVER. I speculate that the marriage took place sometime between WWI & WWII. Cindy Gallard Denver Researching: ROITBLATT, LOBATCH --Vystupovici, Ovruch FELDMAN, HERMAN--Litin, Vinnica

Census Data: fahgeddaboudit

Anita Citron <anitac1@...>
To All,
I went to the National Archives on Friday, my first trip and salivating at the thought of finding the info I was looking for, via the national census of 1900, 1910, and 1920. Guess what? The census is about as reliable as my father's recently described magic act on my gm's citizenship application (he made my uncle Harry disappear). People I KNOW were in NYC (and I had their addresses based on the city directories) appeared absolutely nowhere. In 1920 there were precisely four families of the NADW/VORN/E/Y clan living in NYC. Only one appears on the index and the sheets themselves. I went to the pages themselves only to find that these were the pages that the enumerator used disappearing ink on. Also, two uncles who were shown as born in Connecticut were shown (in 1920) as born in NYC. Additionally, my gf's arrival in the USA moved to 1892 (it had moved already >from 1893 to 1891). The point? If you are looking for precision, whether it be in a name, a gov't doc, death certificate, etc., as they say, fahgeddaboudit (that's New York City "English" for forget about it!). Diaspora routes into Lithuania
#lithuania
Noyma Appelbaum <noyma@...>
I have two questions which some researchers in litvaksig may be able to
answer. I recently read that a person connected with a Jewish family from Lithuania was able to trace his family's route >from Spain following the expulsion of the Jews to France, Netherlands, across northern Europe, and into Lithuania. Was this a common experience among Lithuanian Jewish families? Have other families been able to to trace their ancestors' movements via this route? Are there documented materials about this pattern of movement? 2. There was a recent report >from South Africa that a person who had emigrated >from Zagare had written a book about his childhood and reasons for leaving Zagare. Does anyone have the title of the book , the author's name, and availability >from a library or elsewhere? Noyma Appelbaum Philadelphia, PA noyma@bellatlantic.net

Lithuanian Jewish Occupations around 1940

ROBERT WEISS
The following is the merged dictionary of Jewish occupations in Kelme around
1940. The occupations were found in the telephone directories for Kelme in 1933-1940, and in the Kelme Arrest List >from June 26-28, 1941. Thank you to all those who helped me with some difficult translations last month. The list will be verified by a knowledgable source and listed as a searchable database on the LitvakSIG web page. Please report any corrections or additions to Robert Weiss at RWeissJGS@aol.com. The convention I used for Lithuanian letters that are not part of the English alphabet is to indicate the letter with a "tic" (') after the letter if it is the lithuanian letter. a'=nasal a c'=ts sound e'=either nasal e or narrow e i'=nasal i s'=sh sound u'=either nasal u or long u z'=zh sound Be aware that I sorted the list by Lithuanian word in English alphabetic order, but this will not be the correct order per the Lithuanian alphabet. Can one of you clever people look at the link below and tell Two young lads are wearing Polish Army uniforms - both are in privates. Those are uniforms of The Polish Army between 1918 and 1939. Distingushed are historicla army hats - so called rogatywki (four corners) and "general" collars. Some of those elements were again re-introduced in the modern Polish Army (following the liberation from the Soviet camp) Regards Alexander Sharon Calgary, Alberta, Canada

ABELI - Abush ??

A couple of weeks ago there was a thread about Abush,
perhaps as a diminuitive for Avraham or Abba. I have run into several cases of Avraham Abeli, spelled aleph bet (yud) lamed yud. Is this another form of Abush? Israel Pickholtz
