Emigration from Odessa

Further to the query about emigration routes, my GGM (Anna nee Steinhauer
Lapidus) and her second husband, Frank Pollack, fled >from Odessa with their two surviving sons in 1921, because Frank Pollack was about to be arrested by the Bolsheviks. After a traumatic escape to Roumainia the family lived in Chernowitz and eventually emigrated to Montreal in late 1925. My late great uncle's biography detailed the route they took to Canada. They left >from Constanza, Roumania, on a cargo boat, the SS Madonna, with about 150 other Russian Jewish refugees and travelled via Istanbul, Pireaus, Greece, Morocco, Lisbon and the Azure Islands, and finally landed at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. from there they travelled by train to Montreal and were helped by theCanadian Jewish Relief Committe and the Jewish Welfare Society. In his notes my late great uncle mentioned "Papineau Hall" adjoining a synagogue in Montreal. I should imagine that travelling across the Mediterranean >from Morocco to Spain and/or France would not have been impossible. Emigration from Libau to Palestine
#general
K.& L. Bertelsen <klb@...>
Recently while rereading the Libau Yizkor Book - *A Town named Libau*,
which is available via the Latviasig home page, I found a reference which I thought might be of interest to people trying to work out how their ancestors got >from Place A to Place B at any given time. The extract was called *The 1934 Odyssey to the Land of Israel* by Jack YAKOBI. He discussed the costs and route he and his friends took by train from Libau to Riga, then to Warsaw and on to Bucharest to Constanza, andBeirut, >from where they were smuggled across the border into Palestine. Please remove vi >from my address Lorraine Bertelsen Boho downunder

What is POSNANTECK?

Miriam Deitcher <deitcher@...>
In his writings, my great-uncle (Yankel SZMULEWICZ) refers to his cousin
POSNANTECK in Hamburg. POSNANTECK was in the shoe business in Hamburg, and later went to Argentina. His father-in-law was Shlome BIRENZWEIG (who was my ggrandmother's first cousin.) My question for the group is: What sort of name is POSNANTECK? Is it a first name, or a last name? Where does it come from? Thanks, Miriam S. Searching: GOODMAN
#general
KJermaine@...
We are looking for descendents of Rachel Pearlman married to Louis Goodman.
Louis was born in l850 and immigrated to New York. Rachel was born in l855 and came to New York City when she was 14 year old (l864). They may have had 10 children. Some of their names were Rebecca, Lillie, Moses or Morris, and Lester. Louis died around l895 to l897. One of their children went by the name of Beatrice and we believe she may have been Rebecca. Rebecca was born around l892 or l893. Beatrice married William Kavanov around l915 to l919 and they had one child named Elaine. We are looking for Elaine Kavanov/Katkin/Losow or possibly another name. She was born on December 16, l920 and after being discharged >from the army disappeared around l946. She was living in New York at that time and may have gone to California. We are trying to find out what happened to her and any other information about any other Goodman family members. Beatrice's death in l934 caused the family to lose track of the Goodman branch and we would like to reconnect with them. Rachel or "Ray" Goodman as she was called, lived on Attorney Street in the very early 1900's as indicated by the l900 census. If you know anything about this Goodman branch, please let us know at k.jermaine@aol.com If anyone has access to the New York State Census after l920 and is willing to track this particular family, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Kathleen Jermaine k.jermaine@aol.com

Searching: The Witch from Volhynia

Arnie Levine <arnie@...>
My father used to call my grandmother a witch because people used to
come to her to be cured of their ailments: Incarnations, Herbs, Poultice, etc. Her name was Sarah CZUSIK nee SCHECTMAN and became Sarah RICH when she came to Chicago in 1913. Most of her European adult life was spent in Malin and Ksaverov (currently the Ukraine). Her mothers name we think was Nachumah or Naomi nee HORWITZ we think from Sarnoviche. Sarah had 7 children that lived: Rosa (Rose), Channa (Anna), Reuben (changed to Harry), Schmuel (Sam-Changed to Jack), Elia (changed to Al) and lastly born in Chicago, Riva (Evalyne) they all had last name of RICH. Any knowledge or information pertaining to this branch of my family please contact me. Thank you.
