FTJP Success! #general

Arlene Weiss <Balbec@...>

I had to pick myself up >from the floor when I saw my cousin's name listed
on the Family Tree of the Jewish People found on JewishGen.

By learning the married name of my cousin, I was able to find her phone
number, and I soon found myself talking to someone I hadn't seen since her
wedding over 50 years ago. Since I have an unusually small family, I am
very grateful for the Family Tree of the Jewish People on the Internet.

Dear all:

This is the new Internet web site in English called "JEWISH RUSSIA." It
provides the observation of the Jewish life in Russia and other countries
formerly consisted the Soviet Union. Also every Wednesday you may read a new
digest of the fresh issue of "MEG" (which is, probably, a new Jewish newspaper
from Russia, not sure, but may be Moskovskaya Evreyskaya Gazeta -- Moscow
Jewish Newspaper):

Sincerely,

Re: Schwarz-Noir-Noar #general

MBernet@...

The version I heard relates to Canada where, for the purpose of the story,
or perhaps in fact, one may only translate one's name into English or
French.

Mr. Stein settled in Montral and changed his name to Pierre.

Then he moved to Toronto and changed it to Peters.

By and large, my experience in the 1940's and 1950's has been that Jews in
UK were much keener than those in the USA to change their name and thereby
become less of a foreigner.

LenHill <lenhill@...>

I'm trying to trace Jewish family names, going back to the 19th century
and before in Europe:
DEFARGE, SCHACHNOW, HECHT, FRIEDLANDER, WOLFSY, SEEMANN.
These families lived in France, Germany and part of Poland that became
Germany after World War I.

Tnx,
Leonard Hill (Hecht)

Re: Red Star Line - Ship company #general

Stephen Landau <stephen.landau@...>

A search of online Morton Allan Directory at
http://www.cimorelli.com/vbclient/shipmenu.htm did not result in any "hits"
for a ship named Sislocz (you might want to do the search with some variants
if there's some doubt as to the spelling of the name). For some general
information about the Red Star Line and its history, see

I recommend you look in the book Morton Allan Directory of European
Passenger Steamship Arrivals. Many libraries have it. It lists ships by
year and lines and also tells about ports. I know Red Star line is in
there.
