Re: Yiddish equivalents #general

Can anyone help me with the name "Zev"? What would an anglicized version
be? And "Luba"?

Thank you,

Re: Records in Canada possibly for Montreal #general

Sudbury is in Ontario and if you go to www.archives.ca, pick your language
(English or French), click on Genealogy Research, click on Index to the
1871 Ontario Database, then you can conduct a search. When I did it I found
two Sarah Frank, but no Solomon Frank.

I was searching for my ancestors in Montreal and ran into this problem.
There are a number of districts and sub-districts in the 1901 census for
Montreal. They include names like: Ste Anne, West Ward, Quartier, Center,
East Ward, St Louis, St James, St Mary's, St Antoine, St Lawrence, St
Jaques, etc. It would help if you could narrow down which area you think
they are from. Why is this a problem, these districts & sub-districts are
spread out over 10 microfiche reels. Many hours worth of work to find a
couple of names (trust me I know - <grin>).
DJD
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

<snip> Secondly, my grandfather's eldest sister Sarah Frank (nee Diamond)
went to Canada in the year ????? (husband's name Solomon Frank)
<snip> It is possible that one of the first places she went to was Sudbury
(somehow or other this sticks in my mind). Ten years ago I found some of
her descendents in Montreal, still with the surname
<snip> I would think that Sarah entered Canada around the turn of the
century or very early 1900's.

In 1946 my grandfather sponsored his cousins' entry

The family included two little girls who had been born in

Newspaper #general

David W. Harris <dharris1@...>

A distant ancestor of mine, Moses HOROWITZ, apparently tried his hand at
publishing a newpaper written in Romanian and Hebrew. About 1862 - 1868,
in Iasi (Jassy) Romania, he tried to put out the newspaper called Timpul
(Time). He was unsuccessful and eventually moved on to other things.

I am trying to find a way to get a copy of the newspaper. Any ideas?
Thanks,

Heidi,
The longer I hang around JewishGen the more I learn.
My GGM Perel SILVERSTEIN MAZOR came through Constantinople in January 1921
on her way >from Odessa. She was 70 at the time and I thought that was pretty
brave for a little old lady. The ship manifest was so screwed up that I
finally found her listed as Pearl MAJOR. All else checked out so I knew it
was her. Thanks for clearing up the Odessa--Constantinople route.

Province or gubernia question #general

Linda Birnbaum <birnbaum@...>

I am trying to find the Russian links for my husband's grandmother,
Bella BERLIN SEFKIN.

We have found the Ship's manifest when Bella and her daughter came to
the US. It says that she came >from Rudnie, Russia. The name and
cmplete address of nearest relative or friend in country where she came
from lists her father, Joseph BERLIN, and for address lists (what I can
decipher) Rudnie, Hagiler(???) Russia.

The typed index card >from which we found the ship's manifest has this
as:
Rudnie, Megilew, Russia.

We always assumed that Bella came >from Rudnya, between Vitebsk and
Smolensk, close to what is now Belarus. What would be the meaning of
Hagiler or Megilew? The province?

Thanks.

Hyman (Chaim) BERLIN born 15 March 1894 in Rudnya
died May 1986 in New York
had a daughter named Blanche.

Bella always told us she was >from Rudnya, so I am not sure what Hagiler
or Megilew was, perhaps the province?

Let me know if these BERLINS sound like family to you.
