SHALOM Foundation #general

Haim Sidor

I recently purchased the book "And I Still See Their Faces : Images of
Polish Jews". It is a "Family Photo Album" of Polish Jewry. Many
family names are given as well as stories of the families or individuals
from the Holocaust Period. There are also (sadly) many pictures with no
names (but many times the towns are given).

The book was printed in Poland (text is in English and Polish),
seemingly as the 'catalogue' to the photo exhibit "Images of Polish
Jews" (which I am sorry to have missed - did anyone see it in Washington
D.C.?? or at Yad VaShem??).

Does anyone know more about the SHALOM Foundation and does it do
research??

I just became aware that a Military Census was taken in 1917. Has anyone
heard anything about this and where would the records be held? It seems each
state took their own census.
I have not seen a Military Census for Connecticut, but I do have a three-volume
set of books entitled, "Service Records, Connecticut, Men and Women in the
Armed Forces of the United States During World War 1917-1920," published by the
Adjutant General of the State (there is no date of publication shown). I would
guess that other states published similar books.

Along with a brief military record, the roster shows the person's name, race,
serial number, and address at time of enlistment. I would be glad to do
lookups if anyone is interested.

VENITT/VERACHNETSKY name change #general

Seesiegel <seesiegel@...>

Both very unusual names, yet I am having difficulty locating them. My
grandfather, Louis VERACHNETSKY (b. 1874? Odessa Russia,) (d. 1930's, Rochester,
NY) came to the US around the turn of the century. Siblings were Morris
(Menasha)VENITT and Schaindel. (They changed their name) I found the obituary
for one of Morris' sons (Max) with children listed, but find no white pages
(internet) listing for Michael, Sandy or Jeffrey VENITT. If they have moved
out of the country, how else could I find them?
My ultimate goal is to find the names and place of origin of the parents of
Louis VERACHNETSKY. He changed his name to ROTENBERG at some point and married
Celia TOBIAS (>from Latvia). I wrote for his marriage certificate, but no
response yet.

I also know that Morris VENITT married Fanny SCHOSID.
Please email to me privately if the above information is recognizable to you.

Help find Sam GROSS, Bronx #general

Theo Travis <travis@...>

Having unearthed my grandmother's address book, I found a listing for a Sam
Gross, who could be a cousin of my grandfather. Both of my grandparents have
been dead for over 20 years, so I can't ask them. It is possible that Sam
GROSS is also dead, and he would certainly be in his 80s if alive. There was
no area code or address listed, which indicated to me that he probably lived
somewhat locally to my grandparents, who were in the Bronx. I have checked
the internet and there is one S Gross listed in the Bronx, but with a
different phone number.

I have two questions: was a number that began with 923 (5727 was the rest)
likely to be in the Bronx and does anyone have an old phone book (very old)
from the New York area that they can check so I can at least nail down when
he was living at that number and maybe when he stopped living there? I live
in London so I can't go to the NYC public library for myself. Can I order
phone books >from the FHC?

Thanks
