Passenger list for Aron Rosett
#general
Walter Rosett
I have many records related to my great uncle Adolphe Rosette aka Arnold
Rosett b 1868 (abt) except a passenger list or naturalization record. Supposedly he arrived and was married in 1888 (>from 1900 Census). I suspect that he lived in NY until 1895 then moved to Baltimore. He died in Baltimore in 1916. Later his widow Sophie Woloseff stated she was naturalized by marriage 1 Jun 1890. Sophie was a cousin and her mother was a Rosett. I could find no marriage record in NY. It is possible that he married before leaving the old country. Needless to say all names and dates may not be accurate. The only record I could find that might be related to his arrival was a Hamburg passenger list for Aron Rosett b 1868 departing 8 Sept 1889 >from Hamburg to NY by way of Glasgow on the ship, Coblenz (record on Ancestry.com). He was >from "Wittebsk, Russland" which matches the origin of his brother Joshua who arrived in 1891 in NY >from Vitebsk through Hamburg. No other record matches my relative this closely. Unfortunately I cannot find any record of US arrival at any port, or ship >from Glasgow or Canada. The ship did not sink since it was in use for years after. I wonder if someone has more knowledge, luck or ability to help out. In addition, in the 1900 census he was listed as naturalized and although I can find an index card with minimal information in Maryland and one in NY that could possibly related I can find no actual record. The one service said it would be in Philadelphia and Philadelphia said it would be in Maryland. The pages of other records and newspaper articles about him offer no useful information in this regard. Thanks Walter Rosett Albuquerque NM wrosett@mindspring.com

Seeking information on R Chayim Dov(id) (Z/S)(u/i)sselman

YaleZuss@...
In the wake of "Roots", I was able to interview my grandfather about his
ancestors. He told me his grandfather was a rabbi, whose name appears to have been Chayim Dov(id) (Z/S)(u/i)sselman, lived c.1815-1885. About a year ago, I turned up evidence that he was probably born in or near Horodetz, Belarus, but most of his career appears to have been in western Ukraine, with a possible posting in Odessa. Grandpa never met his own grandfather, who died before his birth, but by the way Grandpa referred to him, it seems likely that Rabbi (Z/S)(u/i)sselman had something of a reputation for being tough. There is nothing to suggest that he was Hassidic, and I infer that he was a mitnaged sent into the heartland of Hassidism to hold the line. Although they used the surname Zisselman in Ukraine, my grandfather and three of his five brothers took the surname Zussman when they came to America, a fourth used Sussman. I mention this because there was a dynasty of Zussman rabbis based in Ostrog (see {\em Mizkeret LeGedolei Ostrog} by Menachem Biber) whose members held positions in various communities where members of my family lived, including the towns where my grandfather and father were born. My theory is that my gg-grandfather (or perhaps his father) married into the Ostrog Zussmans and then took their surname, adding the "el" to clarify that he wasn't a descendant -- the Ostrog Zussmans were kohanim, and we're not. Unfortunately, I don't have a given name for my gg-grandmother. I am looking for a way to establish a connection, or prove there wasn't one, and would much appreciate some guidance on how to proceed. How to attend the IAJGS conference when you can't get to Seattle
#yizkorbooks
Janette Silverman <cochairs@...>
My Co-Chairs and I know >from the emails we get, that there are so many
people who want to attend the upcoming conference in Seattle, Aug 7-12, but who just can't fit the conference into their calendar or their budget. Although virtually attending the conference isn't as fabulous as being there, it does provide access to about 90% of all of the conference sessions. We also know that many of the attendees are frustrated at not being to attend every session, and since there are over 235 sessions, that's obviously physically impossible, so we have solutions for you. There are two ways to hear/see what's happening at the conference, and they work well together. I'll briefly describe each of them, since their titles may not be descriptive enough. The first is LIVE! This provides live streaming of sessions by some of our most popular speakers. This means that if you have the time, you can watch (and hear) the sessions as they are being presented, as if you were there! The conference is in Seattle, Washington, so the time of each session is listed in Pacific Daylight Time (UTC/GMT -7 hours). If you don't have time to tune in while the session is streaming, no worries. After the conference is over, you 90 days to access the session "on demand". The other way to hear the sessions is to purchase the audio/slides recording. Almost all of the sessions at the conference are being recording (voice only) with the slides the presenter is using. Some presenters do not have their slides being recorded, in which case, the recording of that session is only audio. If you purchase this, you will receive the whole package a few weeks after the conference is over and be able to listen to the presentation and see the slides as your leisure. Not all presentations that are on LIVE! are having audio recordings made. To purchase LIVE! and/or the audio and slides, go to the IAJGS 2016 website (http://www.iajgs2016.org/) then, under the registration tab, Select New Registration; Click "Go to Registration Form (for starting out)" near the bottom; Click the gray New Registration button; Enter your personal information and click Continue; Select 5. Full LIVE! only (not attending in Seattle) or 7. Full LIVE! & Full Audio/slides (not attending in Seattle) and continue to the end. Of course, if you are attending the conference and want to purchase the packages, there are options on the menu above to do that as well. Looking forward to seeing many of you in Seattle! How to attend the IAJGS conference when you can't get to Seattle
