The Lviv "Space of Synagogues" project

The Center for Urban History of East Central Europe in Lviv, with whom
Gesher Galicia has close relations, has written to us about the opening of a launch in Lviv, on September 4, 2016, of the Space of Synagogues project. At the opening of this memorial, a visual installation, "The Art of Memories: Jewish Life Stories of Lviv", by Oleg Voronko, will be projected onto the surviving walls of the Golden Rose synagogue. This was one of the centers of Jewish religious life in the city, and was destroyed during the Holocaust. The Center for Urban History has appealed to our readers for any objects or photos bringing back memories of former Jewish life in Lviv (Lwow, Lemberg) or for particular stories or memories they would like to share. Any such items should kindly be sent, with descriptions, to Natalia Yeromenko at <n.yeromenko@lvivcenter.org>. The deadline for receiving these digital items is August 8, 2016, because of the time needed to prepare the the launch. Items submitted can include images of: - relatives and ancestors >from or connected with Lwow; - objects that recall family >from Lwow; - trips to Lwow and places there connected with family members; - images of descendants of Jewish families >from Galicia. Images sent should be between 500 Kb and 1 Mb in size and in jpg/jpeg, png, gif, tiff or pdf format. Tony Kahane Chair & Research Coordinator, Gesher Galicia http://www.geshergalicia.org

Thank you all who responded to my request for donations for the last
batch of data (about 10,000 images) we have the opportunity to acquire- I am happy to report that the costs to acquire those images was about $2200 not $2800 as I originally estimated and thanks to everyone's generosity, we have received $1500 towards that goal. Today, I woke up to an email >from the CAHJP telling me that more documents have been acquired >from GAKO - the Kiev archives: --1850-51 census of Jews which includes the following shtetls in the Kiev Gubernia: Byshev, Dymer, Borodianka, Motyzhin, Rokitno --and new materials >from the 1897 All-Russian census for Berdichev All together, these are an addition 3336 pages of documents. It will cost us a little over $800 to acquire these, bringing my original estimate of $2800 close to target - between these two batches of data, we need to raise $3000 - we are halfway there. I would love, at the upcoming IAJGS conference to be able to announce that we have received enough contributions to acquire the 13,000 new pages. The data I previously announced came from Vital records >from Zhitomir Archives (GAZhO) - Leschchin - births 1863-1882, Ianushpol - births 1865-1874, Zhitomir births 1896-1907 and marriages 1895-191 Revision lists >from the Kiev Archives (GAKO): 1795: Radomsyl, Brailov, Brusilov, Korotyshev, Malin, Khodorkov, Rozhev, Chernobyl, Khabno, Radmyclskii, Ivankov, Gornostaipol and Steblev 1816: Vasilkov, Belaia Tserkov, Fastov, Rokitna 1818:Kiev, Borodianka, Dymer, Rzhishchev, Romno, Iasnogorodka, Byshev, Ignatovka, Makarov 1834: Makhnovka 1850: Berdichev, Gostoml Ignatovka, Iasnogorodka, Vasilkov, Krasnoe 1850-1852: Belaia Tserkov 1851-1858:Vasilkov 1851-1854: Berdichev 1851: Priluki To donate, please choose the "Donate" button on the Ukraine SIG page, then "donate" then Digital Documents Acquistion and Transcription Project. If by some chance we get more in donations than the $3,000 needed to acquire all of these documents (13,336 images) then we will put the additional donations towards transcription/translation. For that second part, if we have to pay translators, it will cost at least $50,000 - my hope is that we will be able to use a combination of volunteers and translators. More Posts from site surveys in Bukovina 12 July 2016 - Budinetz, Chudey, Berehomet

Dear Czernowitzers,
The World Organization of Bukovina Jews delegation visited North Bukovina Jewish Heritage Sites in the area of Storozhynetz and Czernowitz on 11-15 July 2016. In addition to filling the site surveys (I've posted them before) we took more pictures. In the next few days I'll post them to the group. Today you can see below the set of visits on 12 July 2016. Budinetz Memorial: http://www.eylonconsulting.com/bukovina/blog/?p=1566 Chudey: Jewish Cemetery and Memorial: http://www.eylonconsulting.com/bukovina/blog/?p=1575 Berehomet: A factory was built on the Jewish Cemetery and no graves remained. Only a memory room exists now in the factory yard. http://www.eylonconsulting.com/bukovina/blog/?p=1600 We have covered in this trip 12 site surveys and visited a few more. My previous post generation some interest/feedback, but what WE NEED MOST IS VOLUNTEERS!! Our list has more than 700 sites and obviously our team alone would not be able to finish it soon.... If you are planning to visit Bukovina or Transnistria and willing to devote ~20 minutes to also capture the site information with the mobile app (to then put it in our website) - please contact me on my private email. All can then enjoy it. Best regards and thanks in advance on behalf of our Project Committee, Baruch Eylon http://www.eylonconsulting.com/bukovina/

They need names and numbers for our DUTCH&SEPHARDI Special Interest Group meeting, by Thursday 28th. Here is a copy >from last week, of my notification to all. Thank you to those who have already replied. Dear interested attendees, Thanks to a fellow member's suggestion for a speaker, one has been found for the D&S SIG meeting on the 31st of July. 2.30-6pm - including a visit to and the use of our library. This summer, I will be attending the IAJGS Conference in Seattle, WA, August
7-12, 2016 . Usually, you are used to reading my posts on various topics on the Jewish Genealogy Facebook Pages, the JewishGen digests or the JewishGen Blog. Now, you will have the opportunity to see my posts for the duration of the Conference ONLY on the JewishGen Facebook Page which you should "LIKE" and sign up for. For those of you who are attendees at the Conference, you may see me at a session, perhaps in the resource room, at a lab, or a luncheon or a social event. I'll try and cover a bit of it all. So, if you recognize me, please do stop and say hello. Tell me what you are doing and what you are learning and what brick walls you are trying to break down. If you are unable to attend the Conference, be sure to look at the JewishGen Facebook Page as I will be posting there once a day. Also, remember to get "LIVE"to see gavel-to-gavel coverage of the sessions. In this way, you will be able to keep up with what is happening at the Conference. I'm looking forward to interacting with you all and learning a lot at the Conference. See you soon!!! Ann Rabinowitz arabinow@bellsouth.net
