Susana Leistner Bloch

Dear Friends,

Although we have a wonderful team of dedicated and overworked
volunteers, there are not enough of them and prospective webpage
owners have to wait for months to get technical help.

If you have the necessary skills we urge you to volunteer and help
someone create a webpage dedicated to a Kehila / Shtetl / Gemeinde /
Town / Immigrant Neighbourhood, and in this way honour and memorialize
the Jewish community that once lived there and also provide a valuable
resource for their descendants.

Please contact us : <bloch@mts.net>

Bessarabia SIG, KehilaLinks websites #bessarabia

Yefim Kogan

Hi everybody,

I want to stress today an importance of town/shteitl website for our region. If you go to
JewishGen.org / KehilaLinks /Romania &Moldova you will see links to only 16 websites (3 in progress),
but this is not all there are also a number of websites you find in Ukraine for our region - 7 websites
( 1 in progress)... instead of going to Romania &Moldova and Ukraine, we put all our websites at
Bessarabia SIG website / KehilaLinks websites.

I think that 16 +7 = 23 is a very small number of websites we have for the region... I would expect to
have something like 100-120 websites. I would really encourage you to start thinking of doing a website.

You may say - I do not have computer knowledge to put something on the web... my answer would be
- you do not need to!!

In order to create a website - there are TWO TASKS:

- 1. Collect information (on a computer) about the town or shteitle, get everything available >from
books, encyclopedia, etc. etc. Get stories >from people about life in that place, photos, post cards,
maps, and more/
This is the PRIMARY task

- 2. Do the technical work to put this all information on the website... that part is much easier and
less time consuming. There are people in our community who can put this information on the website.

I created several websites:

Kaushany; Dubossary; Tarutino - I collected information and put in on the website
Camenca (Kamenka) - person asked me to put it online... I did not collect information, and only did
the technical work

Inna V. created a great website for Tiraspol, and she got help how to do this >from Ariel Parkansky,
who created a tool in order to put information on the website. You can check Ariel's style of the
website at following sites: Kishinev, Kiliya, Akkerman.
Look also on other websites. You will see many different ways of doing it.

To do a KehilaLinks website for a town/shteitl is to create a MEMORIAL for the people who used to live
in that place. Towns may not have cemeteries, any signs that our ancestors lived there, but the website
will remain for our children and for future generations.

Who will do this? It is only us!

All the best,
Yefim Kogan

Novopoltavka, (Jewish Agricultural Colony, Kherson region), the year 1858 #ukraine

Subject: Novopoltavka, (Jewish Agricultural Colony, Kherson region),
the year 1858

Thank you so much Vladimir Kreschyshyn for the information on Novopoltavka.
It is the first time that I met our family last name, Arkilovich in a list.

Could you inform about the original list, where is it and if it is
possible to get a copy of it.

Also, is there more information about the families in that list?

Thank you so much for your help,

Anita Tarsi

State Department Overrides to Visa Quotas during WWII #general

Moishe Miller

Dear Group,

In 1995 I wrote to the INS via the US Dept of Justice under the FOIA to
obtain any additional material related to my grandfather's permission to
enter the USA >from Europe during the war, in 1942.

They sent me quite a few documents related to filings at the US consulate in Nice,
France. His application for Immigration Visa (Quota) lists that he was exempt >from
exclusion as: "non-applicable. Clearance instructions have been given by
Department's cable No. 159, dated April 24, 1942."

What entity might I contact to find out more about the contents of
"Cable #159"? Is "Department" the US State Department?

Thank you,

Moishe Miller

How to Display Old Records #general

Moishe Miller

Dear Group,

I have dozens of old papers of many different sizes, including census
records, naturalization records, ship manifests, birth/marriage/death
records, etc.

Can anyone suggest methods/materials for mounting/displaying these in a
scrapbook, that will not ruin the records and will last for a long time?

I would appreciate any thoughts or guidance that you have to offer.

Dear moderator Pereszlenyi is also surname and not a place name.

Moderator: Your overworked Moderator stands corrected! In this case, PERESZLENYI
is a surname. Nevertheless, the guideline about using upper-case fonts for surnames
is a sound one and would have helped to distinguish the surnames in this message.
The corrected subject line should read:

BENEDEK and PERESZLENYI/Trencsen

Also, when responding to a digest message, PLEASE delete all irrelevant messages and
include a substantive subject line.

Thanks! re: NYC burial locations #general

Roger Lustig

Dear all:

Thank you for the 16 (!) responses I've received to my query about NYC
burials--more than one per hour. I realized after sending my request
that "The standard databases have come up empty" is not very
informative, since few of you know what I consider standard.

In fact, I'd been to: NY Times; JOWBR; Find-a-Grave; Aufbau; and a few others.

Andrew Greene and others suggested cemetery databases. I wasn't aware
that there were so many of them on line! Andrew included several links:
