Could BROD and BROTMAN be the same name? #general

Amy B Cohen

I am hoping someone can help me sort this one out. I have been researching my
great-grandparents and their families. My great-grandfather, Joseph BROTMAN, and
my great-grandmother Bessie came >from Tarnobrzeg, Poland, to the US in 1889 and
1891, respectively. After researching them for years, I've found no records at all
from Tarnobrzeg. All I have are US records and ship manifests. Family lore says
that Bessie was Joseph's cousin and that the family pushed her to marry after his
first wife died and left him with four children. All of those children plus the
five that Joseph and Bessie had together all ended up in the US. The US records
sometimes use the name BROD and sometimes BROTMAN for Bessie's birth name . I
recently discovered a relative who is probably Bessie's sister Sarah. Her US
records also sometimes say her birth name was BROD and sometimes say BROTMAN.

The ship manifest that I believe lists my great-grandfather Joseph BROTMAN has his
name as Yossel BROD, so even he may have been using both names. So could BROD and
BROTMAN be the same name? Or were the records in the US just based on family
members confusing the two surnames?

Thanks for any insights you might be able to offer.

Stillborns #germany

Renate Rosenau <RenateRosenau@...>

Someone asked: Were there birth/death records kept for stillborns and/or
babies who died soon after birth? My great grandparents, Richard LANGER and
Fannie Peterfreund, lost 2-3 babies between 1893-1895. I have found their
other 8 children - including one who only lived for 11 months.

It depends of the region. For instance in Rheinhessen and Pfalz/Palatinate,
Germany, regions on the left border of the Rhine that had belonged to France
from 1892 to 1814, stillborns were registered with a birth- and a death
certificate >from summer 1798 onwards when civic registration was introduced.

I would appreciate a transcription and a translation.
I am especially interested in the names of the grandparents. Thank you

Re: Records from Birlad #romania

I would add to what Sorin wrote that those archives contain vital records
older than 100 years. The ones that are less than 100 years old are still
preserved at the mayor's office (primarie). In my experience with archives,
I also discovered that, unfortunately, the transfer of documents >from the
mayor's office to the national archives (based in the county capital) is
not made promptly. So, the mayor's office may still hold vital records that
are, say, 103 years old because they were not yet transferred.

Good luck

Cheers,
Lucian
