Correct spelling of "Wiesenthal" #general

Lebn@...

One of the December 7, 1998 postings for the Babi Yar photos at the Simon
Wiesenthal Center had an incorrect spelling in the URL site and cannot be
recognized by the host. Wiesenthal was incorrectly spelled as <weisenthal>
The correct site is <http://motlc.wiesenthal.com/pages/t004/t00412.html>
for those of you who would like to visit this site. Hope this helps.

Re: Canadian crossings #general

H. Marshall Schaffner <hmssaba@...>

Howard is on the correct path. Suggest after getting to those cards check
the top right corner for some numbers, which will lead to another film and
"bingo" that second film will have a picture of the actual ship manifest
for your respective family member or members. All kinds of info on the
manifest that will make the effort worthy. Howard head on back to the Nat'l
Archives. Wish I had them out here!

The problem is you need really GREAT eyes to see them. The
records I found were on 3x5 cards microfilmed and the individual
spaces allowed for filling in the information on the card was
small and the handwriting is often poor.
Pack a lunch; start out early and plan to spend plenty of time.
I was rewarded with my efforts, but its not as easy as reading
the passenger lists >from the transatlantic liners.

Trips to Lithuania and Riga #general

Howard Margol

Due to the interest expressed, I am organizing two trips to Lithuania. The
first trip will be June 10-23, 1999 and the second trip July 1-14, 1999.

Included - visits to the various Archives, synagogues, ghettos, Holocaust
sites, meetings with Jewish leaders, sight-seeing, guide/translators, and
ample opportunity to visit and spend time in your shtetl, or shtetlach of
interest.

All meals (except l dinner & 2 lunches) are included, the finest hotels,
modern bus with onboard toilet, guide/interpreters, and much more. I have
made five trips to Lithuania and am very familiar with the Archives, the
archivists, Lithuania and Latvia.

I do not organize these group trips as a profit-making endeavor. Everything
is done "at cost" but in a deluxe manner. My main object is to encourage
Jews to go back to their roots, to encourage them to research their
ancestors, and to enable them to see the rebirth of Judaism taking place in
Lithuania and Latvia.

Important: This trip is not being sponsored or endorsed by Jewishgen.

For details and a full itinerary of the trip, contact Howard Margol, E-mail
<homargol@aol.com>
Very important: Do not ask about this trip through a message to the Digest.
Contact me directly. (My previous trip participants can be contacted if
references are desired).

MODERATOR NOTE: Address and phone numbers deleted for security. Please
contact Howard Margol at his e-mail address. This is the permitted one-
time notice of a non-commercial item.

BORISHANSKI AND CHERTOK FROM NOWOGRUDOK REGION #belarus

James Bennett <bennett@...>

My wife's ancestors were >from two families, both
widespread in the region west of Minsk, centering
around Nowogrudok:
1) BORISHANSKI, BARISHANSKI, BORUSHANSKI,
BORISHINSKI , ETC. The name is derived from
Borishin, a small hamlet or nobleman's estate
in the area. In America the name was shortened
to Baris, Barish, and Boris.

2) CHERTOK, CZERTOK, CHERTOCK etc.

We have considerable information about both families
dating back to the Revision Lists of 1806, when
the Jews in the region first began to use family
names, and continuing into the early 20th century.
