I'm assuming the the AJHS's archives are being packed up now as are the
others that will soon be housed in the new Center for Jewish History in Manhattan. Timing in life is everything. Perhaps then someone out there can speculate on this with me: I have often wondered how my grandparents ended up in CT for a few years. My gf came here in 1891 or 93, my gm came over 1897. They came to NY but two of my uncles were born in CT in 1898 and 1900 (don't know the town--I tried New London for birth certs with no luck). By 1902 they were back in NY (could have been sooner but my father was born in 02 and in NYC). Would I be safe in assuming that they were trying out either a trade or farming in CT with BdH funds? Chronologically it is the right period and they were Russian/Polish. Anita Citron anitac1@erols.com Searching NADWORNY, SILVER (Odessa) MEDNIK/WILDMAN (Berdichev)

Searching: Jews living in the Russian Forests (1939-45)
#general
Sandy Lawrence Edry <sle7@...>
I've been lurking on this list for a few weeks and wanted to introduce
myself as well as find out if any of you can assist me in my current project. I am a reporter (for Newsweek) and I am beginning to do research for a book on the Jews who spent World War II hiding in the Russian forests. I will be using my grandparents' journey as a starting point >from which to tell the story of the hundreds of thousands of other Jews who lived (and often died) in these forests. Basically I am look for three types of information: 1) At its most specific, I am hoping to perhaps find anyone who may have known my grandparents and/or who may have been with my grandparents' group wandering through Russia. Their names were Sender and Bracha TZIMMERMAN or ZIMMERMAN and they came >from Tomaszow Lubelski in Poland (about 35km from Lviv). They traveled first to a Siberian detention camp (I am still trying to find out which one) and then to Samarkand, Uzbekistan. My grandfather had two shops in Tomaszow. One sold men's suits and textiles and the other was a bakery--run by my great-aunt Ruchu (Rachel) TZAHN. 2) Additionally, I am look for information about anyone else >from Tomaszow Lubelski, esp. anyone who can tell me about the town before the war. (I am working on having parts of the Yizkor book translated to English. If anyone has done some work on this please let me know.) 3) Lastly, and most generally, I am also looking to talk to anyone else who spent the war in similar circumstances, whether they were in Siberia or in the Muslim republics, etc. I am aware of several personal narratives written by survivors that retell their journeys but any additional reference material and/or primary sources would be helpful. Thanks in advance for any assistance and I apologize for the long post. Sandy Edry sle7@columbia.edu New York, NY P.S. I will be in Israel for 2-3 weeks in January to conduct interviews and to do research at Yad Vashem so I'd love to meet anyone while I am there who fits the above request. Researching: TZIMMERMAN/ZIMMERMAN (Tomaszow Lubelski, Poland) TZAHN (Tomaszow Lubelski, Poland) mailto: sle7@columbia.edu
