Stillborns

Renate Rosenau <RenateRosenau@...>
Someone asked: Were there birth/death records kept for stillborns and/or
babies who died soon after birth? My great grandparents, Richard LANGER and Fannie Peterfreund, lost 2-3 babies between 1893-1895. I have found their other 8 children - including one who only lived for 11 months. It depends of the region. For instance in Rheinhessen and Pfalz/Palatinate, Germany, regions on the left border of the Rhine that had belonged to France from 1892 to 1814, stillborns were registered with a birth- and a deathcertificate >from summer 1798 onwards when civic registration was introduced. I would add to what Sorin wrote that those archives contain vital records
older than 100 years. The ones that are less than 100 years old are still preserved at the mayor's office (primarie). In my experience with archives, I also discovered that, unfortunately, the transfer of documents >from the mayor's office to the national archives (based in the county capital) is not made promptly. So, the mayor's office may still hold vital records that are, say, 103 years old because they were not yet transferred. Good luck Cheers, Lucian Lucian Turcescu Montreal, Canada

Scans of all Lodz Registration Cards now online
#general
Dear Researchers,
Just a last week I posted an update on the Lodz Registration Cards Extraction Project and indicated that we anticipate additional scans >from the Polish State Archives will be online in the near future. I am delighted to advise that scans for cards with all letters of the alphabet are now live and linked >from the JRI-Poland Lodz Registration Cards webpage at: www.jri-poland.org/psa/lodz-registration-card-scans.htm The cards contain name of head of household and his/her occupation, religion, birthplace and birth date and where they lived before. They also include name of the spouse and where born, and names of children and their birthplace and birth date. There is also an address where they live, and changes of address are also recorded. The JRI-Poland Lodz Registration Cards Extraction team has already reviewed more than 21,000 scans and extracted the names, birth dates and birth cities of nearly 20,000 Jewish residents recorded in Lodz from 1916-1921. The resulting data will provide researchers and theirfamilies with insight into the lives and movement of our people during this time frame and will serve as valuable research and history of the Polish Jews in Lodz. While we expect to upload the first group of 20,000 names by end of this year, with the thousands of additional scans now available, our challenge has been magnified. We need many more volunteers to help us expedite the project to extract the records and have them included in our search system. Please contact Margalit Ir at margalit.a.ir@gmail.com to become part of this dynamic team. Best wishes for a year of health and many research successes. Shana Tova. (Scotland) Scotlands People New Website Launched
#general
Jan Meisels Allen
Scotlands People is the official website of the Scottish Government for
searching government records and archives. It was created >from the merger of the General Register Office of Scotland and the National Archives of Scotland in 2011. This week Scotlands People launched its new revamped website. For the first time we can research the index to records, including statutory records of births, deaths and marriages free of charge. Charges will only be made when the records are viewed or downloaded. The new website also permits access across digital devices and an enhanced search function. Some new features include the choice between a quick search for people across all records indexed by personal name, or advanced search for specific types of records. To read more about the new web site go to: https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/article/welcome-new-scotlandspeople-website If you are a registered user, you will need to login in with your password and you will be prompted to set a user name and password email address and password. If you have not registered previously you need to login in. The site has videos on how to login, register, checking your account and about the website. To access the videos go to: www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/exploring-new-site Note: In accordance with National Records of Scotland policy, images of statutory birth records less than 100 years old, marriages less than 75 years old, deaths less than 50 years old and of divorces, civil partnerships and dissolutions of a civil partnership are not available to view online. Civil registration was introduced in Scotland 1 January 1855 replacing the Church of Scotland system. As of that date it was compulsory to register births, marriages and deaths and standardization of format was required. Scotlands People is a pay-per -view site except for those areas mentioned above that are free. The free search of indexes cover birth, death and marriage registers, census returns, church registers, valuation rolls and legal records (like wills and testaments and coats of arms). To read about the cost of credits and how they are batched see: https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/our-charges Scotlands People is a partnership between the National Records of Scotland and the Court of the Lord Lyon. My great-grandfather, who was called Israel ROSENBLOOM in Baltimore,
was a blacksmith, probably in Kretinga or Plunge, in the late 1800s; Rosenbloom was NOT his surname in Lithuania. I am looking for business records or other records showing occupations in Kovno in hopes of finding his Lithuanian surname. Please contact me if: (1) you know of any such records showing names and occupations in Kovno. (2) you have information about the Lithuanian origins of the family of Israel Rosenbloom (1855-1933) or his brother Solomon Rosenbloom (1869-1942) who resided in Baltimore in the United States.
