attic marriages and arranged marriages #austria-czech

rfc974@...

I tripped over an odd question this weekend. Were attic marriages arranged?

Context for folks for whom this question may be confusing. Attic
marriages (also called quiet marriages) is the term for couples who
wed before a rabbi but did not officially register the marriage,
because they did not have state permission to marry. In Bohemia, the
Familiant Laws restricted the ability to marry until about 1850. In
the families I'm descended from, attic marriages start to become
common in the 1830s or so. There's an open question as to whether the
visibility in the 1830s is a vagary of recording keeping rather than
showing an increase in attic marriages -- what happens is the
*children* of attic marriages start appearing in official birth
records -- there may have been just as many attic marriages before the
1830s but people didn't register the children -- and there are a
number of cases of parents finally getting a state marriage in the
early 1850s and registering all their [often adult] children in a
group which would support this theory.

In any case, this was also a time when virtually all marriages were
arranged, usually through a marriage broker. But if attic marriages
were arranged, then parents are conspiring with their children to
break the law and invite fines and punishment. So what motivated
parents to arrange the marriage? Or are attic marriages cases of
couples who conceived a child and an attic marriage was necessary?
Or...?

Any insights welcome,

Craig

Re: Researching family from Breslau, Silesia including VOGEL in Berlin #germany

Stacye <FernsAndNettles@...>

Robert Koch stated:
"My primary research goals now are to find out about
the period between 1936 and 1939, most notably the real stories behind
the "family" VON BRASE >from Wroclaw; NEUMANN >from Wroclaw "

I sent you (via email) the link to the Aron Hoeffer Archive >from the
Jewish Community of Wroclaw which was recovered >from the Gestapo
following the war ~ there seemed to many record pertaining to the
family Neumann though I found none for Von Brase. I also sent to you,
via email, a few resources shared on this list in past years by
community members Joachim Mugdan and Stephen Falk.

Seeking brother of Meir GRUSHLAWSKY in ? Berlin ? #germany

pheya

Subject:KRESLAWSKY and or GRUSLAWSKI

Dear German Genners
For years I have tried to find a brother of my gg grandfather GRUSHLAWSKY
GRUSHLAWSKY.

In a letter >from a relative 1940 describing my family tree is mentioned,
that my gg grandfather Meir had at least 2 brothers Leibe and Israel.
Israel was a Physician who lived and died in Berlin it says. I have searched
adressbooks and other documents that are availeble online for Berlin,
but can not find this man anywhere! And no documents for him.

I found though several Kreslawsky. Louis ,Carl Ernst, Max ,Paul
and Henny in adressbooks >from Berlin between 1879 and 1930.
But none of them were Physicians and they seem to be born after 1870.
They might be descendants of the Physician above. But I can not prove that.

Meir was born around 1840 so his brothers are >from around that time as well.
Meir and Sarah GRUSHLAWSKY named one son Israel
and he became a Physician in New York. He some times used the name Carl.
He might have studied some of his years in Berlin!
And it is possible that his uncle also used the name Carl?
I am not familiar with searching in Germany and would like to request help
from someone who has time and who is familiar with searching in Germany.
Gmar Hatima Tova to everyone.

Thank You >from Pheya Yair >from Israel pheya@actcom.co.il
