Mr. Ted Gostin at OCJGS - Temple Bat Yahm #general

Susan Rosin

Orange County (CA) Jewish Genealogical Society is pleased to invite you to
attend a lecture by Mr. Ted Gostin on Sunday, September 25th, 2016.

Location: Temple Bat Yahm, 1011 Camelback, Newport Beach, CA
Time: 1:30 - 3:30 PM

Topic: Finding Vital Records Online - Beyond Ancestry and FamilySearch
Overview of the Presentation: While many genealogists will stop their search
for online vital records after reviewing the commercial site
www.Ancestry.com and the Mormons' www.FamilySearch.com website, there are a
multitude of other places on the internet where one might find birth,
marriage and death information. This lecture reviews and illustrates the
breadth of other vital records sources available, including other online
genealogy sites, local, county, and state level public agencies, public,
university and college libraries, and historical and genealogical societies.

About the Speaker: Mr. Gostin has been conducting genealogical research
since 1980, and has worked as a full-time professional genealogist since
1994. He has twice been President of the Jewish Genealogical Society, Los
Angeles, and has taught genealogy for several adult school and university
extension programs. Mr. Gostin has helped plan and organize three national
genealogical seminars, and has been a featured speaker at a half-dozen such
conferences. He lectures widely on Jewish genealogy, Southern California
resources and naturalization and immigration records. Mr. Gostin is the
author of Southern California Vital Statistics: Volume 1, Los Angeles
County 1850-1859, and the owner of Generations Press publishing company. He
was featured on the Larry Lamb episode of the original UK version of the
popular genealogy television show Who Do You Think You Are?. He is very
active in the international Jewish genealogical community, and maintains
contact with genealogists throughout the world. Mr. Gostin is also an
active member of the Association of Professional Genealogists.

On the Special Inquiry page, also on a Detained Aliens page are two
columns: Group and Number These identify the main manifest page and the
line where the passenger can be found. The Group identifier is usually a
large letter (sometimes a number) in the upper right or upper left of
each manifest page.

So, my question is whether it would be worth my while to search the
entire ship passenger manifest for another more typical entry listing
Israel Gordon as a passenger, which entry would include the typically
expected data such as age, occupation, person to meet at destination, etc.

The S.I. page should have two columns to the right of the passenger's
name labelled "Group" and "Number". These are the manifest "page
number" (handwritten or typewritten page number on the manifest) and
line number where you will find the full manifest for the passenger of
interest.

ViewMate requests in Russian, late 1890s Poland records #general

David W. Perle

Hi, all. I have two death certificates >from the late 1890s in
Kalisz, Poland, that I would love to please receive full translations
of.

There's also a birth certificate of a little girl who was
apparently born soon after one of them died and named after them, and
I would love to just get the basic details about her, particularly who
her parents were. (I don't really need the full translation. Just
the basic personal details such as date, parents and their parents
assuming that's given, occupations, whatever else?)

Thanks to all who provide these translations, it is so helpful and
appreciated!

Old Guard Regiment of NYC #general

John Anderson

My great grandfather, Solomon ANDERSON (1856-1930), was born in
Poughkeepsie, New York. I know he was a member of the Old Guard
regiment of NYC since an obituary notice placed by the Old Guard of
the City of New York refers to him as Captain Sol ANDERSON. He died 07
Mar 1930, and the funeral was in Temple Emanu-El on March 9. I also
have a photograph of him marching down Broadway with his regiment
dressed in the full Old Guard regalia (beaver hats, etc.).

I have never been able to confirm this, however, despite many years
searching. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can get information
about his service?

Help deciphering Hebrew abbreviations on tombstones #general

Carol Hoffman

I'm hoping someone can help me with translating abbreviations I have
found on tombstones in Lithuania. I have the abbreviations in Hebrew
characters and can send the short list to anyone who might be able to
help me with that. The challenge is not the dates but the
abbreviations describing the person or his/her situation.

Please write to me privately.

Thank you.
