Social Security and birth names #general

IsraelP <p2o5rock@...>

It seems to me an obvious truth that many people enter
the Social Security system using their birth names but
leave it using another name (most frequently the birth
name of the most recent husband).

Many of us have surnames sufficiently uncommon that we
can learn much >from a general search of the surname,
however we miss many people because SSDI is based on
the name at the time of death.

Is there any way at all (not just online) to get information
from Social Security based on a search for the surname used
at the time the SS-5 was filed? (In fact, they should also
know when the change was made, which could help us learn
approximate marriage dates. But I'm not going to be greedy.)
Does FOIA empower the public to (excuse the expression)
demand
this?

More on Eliach's Eishyshok book #yizkorbooks

Martin Kessel <mkessel@...>

Over the past few days, there has been a flurry of discussion about Yaffa
Eliach's book on Eishyshok (Eikiskes), Lithuania. Although the book
describes one particlar shtetl, it apparently gives a picture of shtetl
life that is of much broader interest. I'm extracting the following two
messages >from the Litvak SIG Digest:

Subject: year of the yizkor book
From: "steven weiss" <szome@hotmail.com>
Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 07:31:02 PST
X-Message-Number: 3

Well not quite, as I was hoping to announce that Yaffa Eliach's book on
Eyshishok won the National Book Award. Still it is remarkable that a
900 year chronicle of a Lithuanian shtetl was a finalist.

Re: No Jewish Population? #hungary

A question has been asked:

Is that assumption a mistake? Should I just consider
the Gazetteer to be somewhat inaccurate? Wayne Roth, Brooklyn, New York

I think you are safe in assuming that any census or gazatteer usually will have
errors, whether it be in the USA or in the Austro Hungarian empire. We have all
seen variousa errors in the US census, the birth records and marriage
records..in all of the paper trails left by human beings. It goes with the
territory and always must be factored in.

If you have other documentation showing your person in that town most probably
whoever was doing the data collection for the gazatteer missed the family, for
whatever reason. See if they show up on the 1869 census. People did move
between towns.
