What exactly was the CANDLE TAX?

I believe this is what the Candle tax is about (and I bet Bob Weiss
could correct me :-)

Taxes were based on property, which Jews were not allowed to own. In
order to tax the Jewish people, a tax was assessed for the entire
community. The Rabbi (or someone in similar authority) was responsible
for collecting it >from community members. This was done by taxing items
-- often candles, sometimes salt, etc -- that Jews had to buy. This
community-based tax was then used to pay the government.

I don't know for sure, but I would think that the candle tax rolls would
provide some very useful information, and (possibly) more accurate than
official census information.

grandparents between their age on the NJ Census and their ship arrivals .
They both had the same age discrepancy even though they entered the country
at different times. I have reason to believe that the census age is
correct even though the ship arrival age shows them both to be 6 years
younger. Is there any reason that immigrants would lower their actual age
on the ship manifest?

Looking for any info on surnames POLUSKY : RIVLIN : TWORETSKY >from Karelitz
in Minsk gubernia. My grand parents went to Rep South Africa in early 1900s.
Some relatives went to USA. They lost touch as often happened. Although I
was in Minsk 3 yrs ago no one at the Jewish agency could give me any info let
alone find the shtetl in question. Regards

I just found out that my GGrandfather came to Canada under the auspices
of Baron de Hirsh. He origanally went to a town called Baron de
Hirsh,(Hirsh colony ) Saskatchewan, which is now called Hirsh. I would
like to know if anyone knows where to find the records of Baron de
Hirsh, immigration etc. I do not know if he was in Saskatchewan long
enough to have other records
such as birth of my Grasndfather before moving to Brandon Manitoba. any

my gf! We had a long talk and expect to keep in contact.

I was able to give him some information about another cemetery plot of the
SHTETL which he didn't know existed.

get a page up there about YOUR shtetl. One never knows what will happen.
Even if you only have a little bit that you've been able to collect.
