Got to jump into this one! My GF Harry BERGER died in 1945 and is listed in
the SSDI. I was able to obtain his SS-5 which provided me with some
information no one had ever known. I suspect that it is just a hit and miss
thing.
Another GF died in 1952 and is also listed.

The German town is Auerbach. Averbach is a Yiddishization. Avrach in

(p. 130), "AVRECH, AVERICK, AFRICK - The word avrekh appears as a tribute
to Joseph (Genesis 41:43). A rabbinic interpretation reads the word as an

Taxes were based on property, which Jews were not allowed to own. In
order to tax the Jewish people, a tax was assessed for the entire
community. The Rabbi (or someone in similar authority) was responsible
for collecting it >from community members. This was done by taxing items
-- often candles, sometimes salt, etc -- that Jews had to buy. This
community-based tax was then used to pay the government.

I don't know for sure, but I would think that the candle tax rolls would
provide some very useful information, and (possibly) more accurate than
official census information.

They both had the same age discrepancy even though they entered the country

correct even though the ship arrival age shows them both to be 6 years
younger. Is there any reason that immigrants would lower their actual age
on the ship manifest?

in Minsk gubernia. My grand parents went to Rep South Africa in early 1900s.
Some relatives went to USA. They lost touch as often happened. Although I
was in Minsk 3 yrs ago no one at the Jewish agency could give me any info let
alone find the shtetl in question. Regards
