Got to jump into this one! My GF Harry BERGER died in 1945 and is listed in
the SSDI. I was able to obtain his SS-5 which provided me with some information no one had ever known. I suspect that it is just a hit and miss thing. Another GF died in 1952 and is also listed. Len Pincus lenny@inorbit.com Murrieta, CA Looking for: SPIEGEL >from Brody, WEINSTEIN >from California, BERGER from Lomza

I am looking for the origin (derivation & meaning) of the surname AVRACH.Dear Barbara, According to KAGANOFF's "A Dictionary of Jewish Names and their History" (p. 130), "AVRECH, AVERICK, AFRICK - The word avrekh appears as a tribute to Joseph (Genesis 41:43). A rabbinic interpretation reads the word as an acronym for av behokhmah rakh beshanim, 'old in wisdom and tender in years.' Perhaps this name was assumed by a person called Joseph in reference to his Biblical namesake." Regards, Lisa THALER (Chicago) grslt@aol.com

Candle tax
#general
Corin Goodwin <corin@...>
From: "Schamroth" <scham@mail.inter.net.il>I believe this is what the Candle tax is about (and I bet Bob Weiss could correct me :-) Taxes were based on property, which Jews were not allowed to own. In order to tax the Jewish people, a tax was assessed for the entire community. The Rabbi (or someone in similar authority) was responsible for collecting it >from community members. This was done by taxing items -- often candles, sometimes salt, etc -- that Jews had to buy. This community-based tax was then used to pay the government. I don't know for sure, but I would think that the candle tax rolls would provide some very useful information, and (possibly) more accurate than official census information. //Corin Barsily Goodwin Cupertino, CA USA BARSILA/BARZILY/BARZILOV -- Russia; Scotland; NYC BASOK/BARSACH -- Orsha (Mogilev), Belarus; Scotland; NYC; Rhode Island BRAUN -- Hungary; NYC ...WEISS -- Hungary; NYC; Middlesex, NJ DU BOFF/MISTROFF -- Gorodische (Baronovich), Belarus; NYC & Long Island KANEFSKY and RIVKIN -- Elizabetgrod, Ukraine; NYC SIGAAR -- Amsterdam ...VAN SANTEN -- Amsterdam; NYC

Age discrepancy
#general
Pennyu@...
Various documents indicate an discrepancy for my grandparents. I know that
this is not unusual. There is an age discrepancy of 6 years for my grandparents between their age on the NJ Census and their ship arrivals . They both had the same age discrepancy even though they entered the country at different times. I have reason to believe that the census age is correct even though the ship arrival age shows them both to be 6 years younger. Is there any reason that immigrants would lower their actual age on the ship manifest? Selma Ring Prager Springfield, NJ
