When my wife's great-grandmother Hannah Dynah LINDENBERG
came to the US >from Poland in 1921 in her late forties, she listed on the passenger list under "nearest relative or friend in country whence alien comes" "Sister Elka GOLDSZTEJN, KrasnoSilce." None of the descendents of either Hannah Dynah or her sister knows of any such other sister, and that this must be a friend rather than a sister. However, we have a posed Polish photo of a couple and seven children which my wife's uncle says is a very good friend of his mother. The uncle says that part of this family passed thru the London Transit Shelter in about 1925-6 on the way to the US and he went with his mother to visit them there. He says these are some of the people in the photo. The Shelter has not been able to help me on this. I find it odd that such a good friend should leave no trace in the memory of anyone in either family (the known sisters had lots of children and both lived quite along time after- wards, themselves). Let alone if it were a third sister. Any ideas how to follow this up on the US end?? (No, we don't know the husband's name or children's names.) Israel Pickholtz p2o5rock@netvision.net.il

Origin Of Surname "SEMI-ELIAS"
#general
Steven Fischbach <fischri@...>
My grandmother left records indicating her paternal grandmother's maiden
name was "Semi-Elias." That branch of her family came >from West Prussia. I suppose that her grandmother, Henriette, was born around 1825. Could the "Semi" mean "half" as in half-Elias? Was this a common practice? Does it follow >from the practice (pre-surname) of naming children "X" son or daughter of "Y"? Could it mean that one of her ancestors had adopted the surmane "Elias"? Any answers would be appreciated. Steven Fischbach Providence, RI fischri@gis.net

Change of names 1938
#general
malkajef@...
An email correspondant asked me for the following information. I am not
certain of the correct answer. Could someone help me help her? The question is: On august 17, 1938 a law concerning the change in family names was passed in Nazi Germany in which any Jewish person who didn't bear a first name other than those classified as "jewish" under the ministry of the interior's guidlines was forced to adopt an additional "jewish" name. There was one for females and a differant one for males. What were those imposed names? Jeff Malka

I am new in the list and involved in my family tree research for the last 20 years.I am not a professional genealogist. 5.I do not know why the list administrator erased >from my original post, among other things. the URL with my family tree which a link to it is listed in the Home Page of H-SIG as members home pages. Hi Debbie,
Thank you. My intention with my post was to request >from experienced list memebers that actually have and are working with embarkation and arrival lists, to clarify the issue that seems, due to the different posts that have been submitted lately, not clear and even cotradictory. I have tried to contact many times the Mormons in Jerusalem and have not yet been succesful to get their help nor assitance. I would apreciate any information that would guide me with whom to talk to get, for example, these embarkation and arrival lists. On the other hand, it seems proper to request >from those of you who already have them all or some, a way how to get copies of them beeing certainly a shorter way to get them. Hi Debbie,
Thank you. My post and questions came with the intention to request >from those list members with experience in the use of embarkation and and arrival lists, to clarify and order the issue that, due to different posts that have been and are yet beeing posted, not only are confusing but some how, contradictory. So, it maybe a good idea and even very useful a complete clarification of this issue to the list. As well, not having personally worked with the lists and not having them in my hands, and learning >from the posts that have been submitted to the list that it is difficult to get them, it is proper to request from those of you who have them, to find a way, maybe, a shorter one,to get them.I am interested.
