I am searching for any information on the family of Joe JACOBS. He was
a boxing manager in the 1940's. Siblings were Caswell, Benjamin, Rose, and Mae. Joe's father was Samuel Jacobs, a tailor on the west side. To my knowledge none of the brothers or sisters had children. But, perhaps there are other descendants. My mother whose maiden name was JACUBOWIC (>from Hungary, later Czechoslovakia) was a cousin. Dear fellow Jewish Genners,
I am so pleased and excited to share with all of you the addition of the SHENKER (Kiev, Ukraine) family to the GOLDMACHER family tree. After nearly two and a half years I was able to add this family to mine in just about 30 minutes on Saturday evening, October 24 by using one of the oldest known genealogical tools -- marriage! from our wedding announcement:Karyn Shenker, 28, a daughter of Dr. Joseph Shenker of Brookville, N.Y. and Mrs. Adrienne Price of Cliffside Park, N.J. and Jonathan Jeffrey Goldmacher, 29, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Joel Goldmacher of West Windsor, N.J. were married yesterday at The Forrestal at Princeton in Princeton, N.J. Rabbi Eric Wisnia performed the ceremony in which Cantor Stuart Binder took part. As many of you know, the planning and associated events surrounding the wedding put a number of requirements on my time that slowed my involvement in my research, this newsgroup, and the Jewish Records Indexing - Poland project. Now that "the big day" has come and gone, I will be getting myself up to speed once again and promise to be more responsive and active. Thanks to everyone for their support over the past few months. Karyn and I look forward to a lifetime of happiness together. She is truly my soul mate and no more genuine words on a Ketubah were ever written than (>from the Hebrew) "I am my beloved and my beloved is mine." On a tombstone in Lithuania, the father of the deceased woman (died 1907) Kalman is usually the name associated with the Hebrew, (originally Greek) name Kalonymos, Greek for the more common Hebrew name ShemTov, (or Good Name/Reputation). The name has a long tradition: At least one of the rabbis of the Mishna was called Kalonymos ("of Socho"). There were a number of Rabbis with that name in the middle ages, some famed for their liturgical poetry. In later centuries the name was often rendered in a more simplified form as Kalman--which of course sounded less "foreign." My uncle, Kalman/Kalonymos Chameides, was the last communal rabbi of Kattowitz and died in the Lwow ghetto. The Hebrew spelling of Kalonymos is Kuf, Lamed, Vav, Nun, Yod, Mem, Samekh. It can be easily misread as Klonims or Klemens. It is not unlikely that someone with the Hebrew name Kalonymous should have an additional name such as Kalman or Klemens or both. Of course the name could become also a family name. It would not surprise me if somone bore all three names: Hebrew name Kalonymos, first name Kalman, family name Klemens. Which does not, of course, answer your question. Michael Bernet seeking: BERNET, BERNAT, BAERNET etc >from Frensdorf, Bamberg, Nurnberg, (Bavaria) KONIGSHOFER: Welbhausen, Konigshofen, Furth (S. Greater Access to WWI Draft Info @ Nat'l Archives in DC
#general
deborah dworski <ddworski@...>
Within the past two weeks the U.S. National Archives in Washington, D.C.
has greatly expanded its microfilm collection of World War I draft registration cards. All of the original registrations are housed at the National Archives in Atlanta. Though all of the documents have been microfilmed, up until now, very little of the collection has been publicly accessible in Washington. One caveat is that Washington does not yet have the finding aids often necessary to identify the draft board of interest. Washington Archive officials are currently copying the draft board maps used in Atlanta and hope to have them available to researchers within the next few weeks. Each state had its own draft boards most typically subdivided by cities and counties--somewhat similar to a census enumeration. Within each draft board, the registrants were arranged alphabetically by surname. For heavily populated cities, the street address of the registrant is a must. (City directories are an excellent resource.) The street address can then be cross-referenced on the finding aids/ maps to determine the corresponding draft board. For a more comprehensive explanation and discussion of this genealogical resource and its potential value to your own research, see the JewishGen InfoFiles. Microfilm reels of the WWI draft registrations in the following states and territories are now available at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. (microfilm series M-1509): Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
