embarkation manifests and the index to those manifests. Actually, they are quite difficult to use. If your ancestor came to the US after 1897, and especially after 1906, the US arrival manifests have equal, if not more, information. The embarkation manifests >from Hamburg are in German. US arrival manifests are on microfilm through the early 1930s at the Mormon library, as well as the NY port indexes and indexes for some other ports. The indexes and manifests are also available through the National Archives. I don't know much about the Rotterdam information. A giant index exists in Rotterdam, and a few libraries around the world have it. It is very expensive, so it is not widely held. I'm not sure where you are in your research background - new to the list or new to research. So, rather than bore the whole group, if you need further guidance, feel free to contact me directly. Question about 19th century Russian census

I was wondering whether anyone had an insight to the following problem. In
census data >from the last third of the 19th century (1875), there was an entry for my great-great-grandfather and one of his sons. There is no mention of his wife, whose name I have yet to confirm. On the other hand, there is no evidence to suggest she was not alive at the time. Is there a possibility of a census not including a woman's name? Her husband was 45 years old. >from my attempts at comparing Hebrew names among a variety of relatives born after 1875,it would appear she was indeed still alive until the beginning of the 20th century. questions I hoped you could help me with: (1) I have traced a long line of relatives named TUMIN >from Shrednik. I have have the revisionist list material. There are a variety of spellings TUMEN, TUMAN, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions on the origin of the name? (2) ANother relative was referred to as Meyer Saetzer SLIFKIN. We had been led to believe that Saetzer was his name, but it does not show up in any records. It has been suggested that Saetzer is some sort of title or nickname. Anyone have any suggestions? The Jewishgen Archives came in very handy when my cousin and I were trying to
decipher the headings of the Civil Registration I received >from Warsaw...I used the translation book at the FHC for most of the words, but they didnt have a translation for Sandek...my cousin looked up a posting in the Archives, and there it was, it means godfather...does anyone know what the word Pathe or Tathe means, used in a similar context...I m guessing it might mean godmother or the person who passes the baby to the godfather to pass to the Mohel...any guesses?
