I can help you with this one. It's in Queens; my ggp are buried in different parts of it. If you write them a letter requesting info, they'll send you (if they have it) name, DOD, date of interment, age, place of death, permit #, funeral home and next of kin. They are definitely more helpful by letter than by phone. Mt. I may inform that there was such family in Minsk along with much more common BASIN. Dr.Beider's book on Jewish surnames listed it for Minsk as well. Vitaly Charny Birmingham, AL

One person responded to my question a few days ago with the suggestion that
ther BYU campus in Israel might have a Family History Center. I checked with the local LDS Family History Center and was told that, although there is a BYU campus in Jerusalem, they do not have a Family History Center there. It still might be worthwhile for someone in Israel to check with the BYU campus to see if there might be a way of getting access to the microfilms. Allan S. For Steven Leof and everyone else who might searching LIFSHITS name in
Mogilev. Dear Moderator: please excuse length of this list. Until our searchable database is up and running, I do what I can. While I can post privately, there may be many more out there who are interested in the names. I have not written LIFSHITS for each name, if it is generally the same name, only the first name and patrynomic if listed. I have written the last name if it differs somewhat >from LIFSHITS. Also, before I get started, another researcher, Howard Leivin, whose email address was/is Howh20@aol.com, also asked for this list quite a while ago. Steven may want to contact him as well. I generally write the name of the person searching the name in my copy of the index. 1872: Shaya-Leib, Leib, Vulf, Yuda, Isroil, Shmuil, Mordukh, Khaim 1873: Essel-Aron, Khaim, Meer/Meir, LIBUSHITS Gamshei 1874: Khatskel, Zavel-Leizer, Shmuil, Itska, Shevel-Leiba, Isroil, Yankel, Isroil-Vulf 1875: Khaim-Dovid, 1876: Meilakh, Essel, Beniomin-Girsh, 1877: Yankel-Zalman, Isroil-Yankel-Iosif-Khaim (1 person, 4 names), Leiba-Itska, Mikhel 1878: Shaya, Abram-Yankel, Essel-Aron, Meir 1879: Shmuil, Leiba, Gershon, Khaim-Dovid, Ekhel-Leizer, Pinkhus Berka, Shmuil, Zavel-Leizer 1880: Mikhel-Leizer, Essel-Aron, Mordukh, 1881: Sholom-Itska, Isroil, Pinkhos, Yankel 1882: Gershon, Shaya-Leib, 1883: Khaim-Berka, Meir, Isroil-Shevel, Leiba, Leiba 1884: Mordukh, Pinkhos, Litman (twins), Kahim-Dovid, Shaya-Leib, Essel-Aron 1885: Movsha-Yankel, Yankel, Mendel 1886: Nosson, Khaim-Dovid, Gershon 1887: Isroil, Mendel 1888: Khaim, Mikhel-Leizer 1889: Essel-Aron, Essel, Vulf, Shmuil, Nosson-Mendel, Gershon, Pinkhos-Yankel, Aron 1890: Movsha, Khaim-Dovid, Lipman, Meir, Abram, Mikhel-Leizer 1891: Movsha Isroilev (son of Israel), Mihel, Shmuil Movshov (son of Movsha), Khaim-Dovid, LIFSHIOTS Aron 1892: Tinel, Gerson, Essel, Yankel, Itska, Mendel, Meir, Mikhel Movsha, Movsha, Shmuil, Whew! That's it, Steven. Enough to start on??? Re: 1891 above. During some years, the persons (many different handwritings) who compiled the index were careful to put the patrynomic in the index. Most entries have no patrynomics. Perhaps the person compiling certain years and certain letters of the alphabet were >from those families where the patrynomics were included. Incidents of patrynomic included are few and far between, limited to certain letters and certain years. Again I always reiterate again and again: These are fathers of the baby boys born in those years. Incidence of so many on this partial list (1864-1894) when the records start at 1837 (for this set of seven-rolls), mean the records are a goldmine for anyone looking for LIFSHITS in Mogilev. Good luck! Best wishes, Schelly Talalay Dardashti dardasht@ix.netcom.com

Searching WENDER in South Africa
#general
Allen Rabinowitz <allenrab@...>
Shalom y'all.
I received the passenger list of the Pembroke Castle for August 12, 1899. It went >from London to South Africa. The following people were traveling together, all listed as miners: J. ARONOWITCH, age 26 - the apparent ticketholder. D. WICKER, age 18 C. WENDER, age 19 J. JAFFE, age 20 J. KUSCHLEDKO or RUSCHLEDKO, age 20 M. SCHOKOR, age 22 The group was headed to Capetown. I'm hoping that C. WENDER is my great uncle, Chaim Yitzchak Wender, who left Lithuania (Yanova) for South Africa before the rest of his family left for the US in 1905. Because I have not been able to get any info on C. WENDER, I'm hoping someone in South Africa might recognize one of the other names of people he was traveling with. Please e-mail me privately if you can shed any light, or make suggestions. Thank you! Jan Rabinowitz Atlanta, GA

Maps of Eastern Europe
#general
David Gordon <dgordon@...>
Ron Feldman asked, "Is there any place I can find a more general
overview of Eastern Europe with countries, regions and provinces for different periods of time...." I have recommended this book before and it is probably worth repeating the recommendation: Paul Robert Magocsi, "Historical Atlas of East Central Europe." It is volume I in a series called "A History of East Central Europe," although the remaining volumes are all detailed academic histories of the region. This particular volume is available (or was very recently) in paperback. It is about 8-1/2 x 12 inch book over 200 pages long. It covers the western portion of Russia all the way west to Italy and Germany. Although it covers the period >from c. 400 to 1992, about one-half of the book cover the period >from the 16th through the early 20th centuries. It not only includes political boundaries and borders but economic, educational, and religious information as well. The maps are, in a word, superb. My only complaint would be that because of their size, great detail is simply not possible. But if you can get access to this volume, I think you will find it not only helpful, but downright fascinating browsing. As the disclaimer goes, I do not know the author and I have no pecuniary interest in the press, the book, the royalties, nor any other conflict of interest, real or apparent. Look for the book--you'll enjoy it and learn >from it. What more could you ask? David Gordon dgordon@interaccess.com Chicago, Illinois Searching: HORWITZ: Smolevichi, Lapichi, Bobruisk?; GORDON: Kaunas (Vilnius?) GEBALOVITCH: Borisov; LEVIN: Kaunas; DRAZIN: Bobruisk BENENSON: Borisov; HURWITZ: Gomel
