Finding Family in Grodno today

Jeanne Gold <JeanneGold@...>
Dear JewishGenners,
I don't remember now which site I was on, but it had to do with Temples/Synagogues around the world. I had a crazy idea, and wrote to several, asking if there was some way to open communication between them and us to help us find our living relatives in Grodno. The following reply just came. I would like to organize those interested and send a single reply (which is why I didn't include how to contact them directly). Please write to me (privately) telling me what you want said/sent to them. Jeanne Gold JeanneGold@iname.com http://www.gold-cousins.org Date: Wed, 21 Oct 1998 19:32:59 +0200 (GMT)organizations. Now our community "Menorah" is goig to organize a Jewish kindergarten.

Internet success
#general
Steven N. Lewis <lewissn@...>
Dear Jewishgenners: I want to share a possible source of genealogical
information that recently paid off for me. While browsing through the Internet, looking for German genealogical web sites, I came across the name of a (non-Jewish) German researcher who had ancestors >from the same tiny Hessian town, Grossenbuseck, that my family came from. I e-mailed him and asked if he ever visited the town. He answered that he had and would again soon, and would be happy to do a little digging for me. To make a long story short, yesterday I received a packet including 100 photos of the graves in the Jewish cemetary there, photos of the town, and a German language book featuring numerous villages in the area, with a 20-page chapter on Jewish life there. All this was sent to me in advance of receiving payment, and represented a gift of time and energy that was remarkable. I've offered to return the favor and sleuth around the US for any of my new friend's American relatives, but so far he hasn't taken me up on the offer. The Internet turned out to be a marvelous tool that put me in touch with a total stranger whose kindness simply floored me. Nancy Breslau Lewis <lewissn@erols.com>

Asylum leads?
#general
Steven N. Lewis <lewissn@...>
I know very little about my gr-gr aunt Pesha RUBIN ____, except that she
was born around 1867 in Kurland, emigrated to Baltimore at age 20, had two children, lived in Philadelphia, and ultimately went "haywire" before dying sometime before 1907. This latter fact was told to me by my wonderful but politically incorrect grandfather.I do not know Pesha's married name, and the only possible lead that I can tease out >from the few facts I know is that she was mentally ill and was perhaps institutionalized. Is there a way to scan asylum records, where I could look for Pesha/Bessie Jewish names? Do any Jewishgenners out there have any other suggestions on how to track down this branch of my family? I have plenty of information on Pesha's siblings in Baltimore but none of it connects with her. Nancy Breslau Lewis <lewissn@erols.com>
