Tarnow LDS Microfilm
#general
Lebn@...
For those searching in TARNOW, there are 4 LDS microfilms. I recently
reviewed film # 948420, Poland-Krakow-Tarnow, births and deaths 1849-1870. The beauty of this film is the DEATH INDEX at the very beginning of the film. Legibility is very good and I recall seeing many of the surnames being searched by those listing on JGFF. There is no birth index but this film should be reviewed by Tarnow researchers. Jacob Hirsch SCHACHTER
#general
Frankel <frankel@...>
Hi all!
I am trying to locate the descendants of Jacob Hirsch SCHACHTER. He was born in Austria in 1874, registered for the draft during World War I, and was a furniture varnisher by trade. His wife's name was Mollie and the 1920 census lists five children: Max, Samuel, Hannah, Gussie, and Rebecca. They lived in Brooklyn, NY. I think he may be my father's "Uncle Jake". Any information will be welcome. TIA Anita Schachter Frankel frankel@neca.com

Social Security and birth names
#general
IsraelP <p2o5rock@...>
It seems to me an obvious truth that many people enter
the Social Security system using their birth names but leave it using another name (most frequently the birth name of the most recent husband). Many of us have surnames sufficiently uncommon that we can learn much >from a general search of the surname, however we miss many people because SSDI is based on the name at the time of death. Is there any way at all (not just online) to get information from Social Security based on a search for the surname usedat the time the SS-5 was filed? (In fact, they should also know when the change was made, which could help us learn approximate marriage dates. But I'm not going to be greedy.) Does FOIA empower the public to (excuse the expression) demand this? Israel Pickholtz p2o5rock@netvision.net.il
