Married names of females: City Directories #general

Howard M. Relles <rellesh@...>

I recently stumbled across an unexpected way of determining married
names of females. While scanning the Newark City Directories (published
almost every year >from about 1880 to 1965) for family names of interest
ONE YEAR AT A TIME, I came across LAST chronological references to
several women in which the name of the man they had just married was
listed. I wish you similar luck. Email me for further info. on the
Newark City Directories.
I would suggest contacting the appropriate public library, university,
or historical society for other directories of interest to you.

Re: Photos of shtetl. Might be Mir #belarus

Hello -

My name is Rich Sinykin. As it happens, I have Jacobson ancestors that came
from Sioux City, Iowa and >from Belarus. I know very little about these
relatives other than that my great-great grandmother's name was Rashe
Jacobson. She was married to Hayim Mushkin. I don't believe that they ever
came to the USA but their children immigrated to Sioux City, Iowa.

Any connection here??

direct or over how long a time period? Did he work along the route to
support himself? obtain money for passage etc? Did he leave a unpublished

Translators Needed for "Vsia Rossiia" #general

TGart7777@...

A genealogist in Maryland has provided copies of the Russian Business
Directory for the Minsk Gubernia, "Vsia Rossiia", to members of the Belarus
Special Interest Group. I am looking for volunteer translators to assist with
a translation effort. Approximatelty 1200 individuals are listed in this
section of the directory. Perhaps each translator could begin with 100 names.
Eventually, the data would be posted in a searchable database on the Net. The
transliteration standards used by the group working on the Grodno voter lists
found at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/grodno.htm#p6 woul also be
appropriate for this project. Please e-mail me if you are willing to
participate in this exciting project. If you are interested in working on the
Vitebsk or Mogilev Gubernia please contact Dave Fox at fox@....

Transvaal Miners Strike #general

Raymond Peentner <rpeentner@...>

Hi Everyone,

This query is probably primarily addressed to those in South Africa, as
I am trying to trace a Phillip LEVINE, according to verbal family history,
he was a 'leader' in the strikes in the 1929 Transvaal Miners Strike and
was subsequently banned or fled and was not again heard >from by the family.

Can anyone shed any light on this man or recommend any published material
which may help me to trace him?

Czestochowa #general

LBisel@...

I have just returned >from Poland and a trip to one of my ancestral towns of
Czestochowa. A visit to the cemetery brought tears, not because I found the
graves of my ancestors, but because a forest has taken over this sacred
ground. Tombstones were toppled and smashed. Some horizontal tombs were
opened and the stones missing. Others were covered with forest debris and
names illegible.

A man who traveled with us offered to restore the cemetery at his own expense
25 years ago when the devastation was not as great. A Czestochover Society in
the U.S. stepped in and wanted to do the job instead. Some money was
collected but nothing was ever done. Because of this inaction, the
restoration seems like an insurmountable task. The eight people with whom I
traveled all have roots in Czestochowa and we are so disheartened by what we
saw.

While in Warsaw contact was made with a Pole who will travel there to assess
the situation. If you are interested in Czestochowa and would like updates,
please contact me privately.

MEINHARD/DT/T Search Update #general

Howard M. Relles <rellesh@...>

So far in my search, there seem to be two clusters of towns in Austria
of 1885-1910 (formerly Poland) where MEINHARD/DT/T's are from. One I'm
calling one the "Chortkov Cluster" (includes Chortkov, Zastavna,
Zaleshchiki, and Jezupol; all now in Ukraine) and the other one the
"Krakow Cluster" (includes Krakow, Tarnow, Gorlice, Ropa, and Wisnicz
Nowy; all now in Poland). Anyone following similar names or towns?
