Rabbi Stern's 10 genealogy commandments #general

Bernard Kouchel <koosh@...>

Rabbi Malcolm H. Stern, (c1916-1994) was widely considered to be the
dean of American Jewish genealogy.

He wrote many articles for genealogical and historical
publications. His best-known book, "Americans of Jewish Descent: 600
Genealogies (1654-1988)," documents the genealogies of Jewish families
that arrived during the American colonial and federal periods
(1654-1838), tracing many families to the present.

He also authored "10 Commandments For Genealogists". Would someone please
post that or e-mail a copy?

Thanks!

Multiple burials #general

Kohanski, Dorothy D. <dkohanski@...>

Regarding Allan Katz's posting about multiple burials in Europe: I
attended a funeral of a Jewish relative who was buried in US Veteran's
cemetery (I believe near Riverside, California), and was surprised that
she was buried in a multiple stacked grave, not side by side. I found
it very strange. Is this customary in veteran's cemeteries?

I asked if someone going to the census office in London could look up a file for me, but I gave the wrong address. The correct address is:
32 Mount Vernon Street .West. Derby. County of Liverpool.

Reply to Deb Zaccaro's question- Name list #hungary

Susanna Vendel <susanna.vendel@...>

Hi I was just wondering if the 2-3 page list >from the
book Varadi Zsidok is available?
Deb Zaccaro
I tried earlier, on 9 Aug, to send the list to Jewishgen digest but it
wasn't accepted as it was against the rules for the discussion group. So I
send it again to our H-sig discussion group, in case it can be accepted
here. I am sure there are many who will be interested by it. I suppose, as
it was a new edition of the book, this year, it could be possible to order
it >from the Jewish Community (Comunitatea Evreilor), ORADEA, Str Mihai

How to find Military Records #general

Jeanne Gold <JeanneGold@...>

I am at a point where I wanted to find the military records of 3
individuals in my family. Having already experienced the frustration in
trying to locate my step-father's in order to have him buried, I knew I was
in for some work. My first instinct was to post a general question to
JewishGen asking some kind soul to guide me through the process. On the
otherhand, I'm an impatient sort of person, so decided to try searching the
JewishGen archives. I must have entered the search criteria in 30 different
ways, getting search results that were getting me no where. One of the "no
where" results (I thought at first), was a strange email about stats on a
personal site. The following is what was found by the search engine:

31% of the visitors (55 of the 179 sampled) had checked the site for "USA
Genealogy", most likely the Social Security FAQ, the FBI FAQ or the
Military FAQ.

just below this line, was:

SO....
What's on this site, anyway?

and shortly below that:

How to use form 180 - for Army/Marines/Navy Genealogical purposes - FAQ

Mr. Rechtman has a very nice FAQ:
http://members.aol.com/rechtman/faq-army.html

and in it, he points you to more information:
http://www.west.net/~awon/awbasic.html

Both of these files are a must read if you are looking to find military
records.

And for those who haven't tried the JewishGen archives search ... it's
worth fiddling with!

Regards,

Jeanne

Searching: PECHENIK #general

David Price <David_Price@...>

I would like to know if the name Yehuda Hersh PECHENIK 1860-1947 who
married Machle JUPITER 1865-1947 appears in the book PECHENIK Family: A
Genealogy of David Hennock PECHENIK, Cameo Printing 1969,library of
congress number 73098500. The book is found in the New York Public
Library, RBKREF. If anyone reading this is able to go there. The library
wants $70 for copying onto film which I will not do unless I am sure
Yehuda appears on it.

Re: Address of Washington Cemetery, NYC #general

Barbara L. Sieving <Sieving@...>

Dear Fae,
I have family members at Washington Cemetery. They do not have a
web site. I am not quite sure of the address but it is located
on Bay Pwy in Brooklyn, NY. There phone number is 718-377-8690.
I know there was some kind of strike at the cemetery (don't know
why) and they only had 4 full time people working there. But
with persistence I managed to get them to find my family
members...give me the info on their headstones, tell me where
they were located and in the family plots they mapped out the
placements. I have a cousin who will be visiting the cemetery
soon....he is taking pictures for me. I do not know how he would
feel about taking pictures of other graves but it won't hurt to
ask.
