I have discovered that my gggm, Sara Lea GELTZER, the daughter of the
head of the hevra kadisha, performed in musical comedies - presumably in
Yiddish - in Iasi, Rumania.
Anyone have any ideas where I can get any information on her in this
field?

Russians to Providence 1900 #general

JGyori <jgyori@...>

I am working on my husband's mother's family. The 1910 Census
lists the family "DICKINS" in Providence. HARRY arrived first
and according to the census, in 1898. The name was eventually
spelled as DICKENS and shows up as such in the 1920 Census.

My next step was to find just HARRY in 1900. The rest of the
family came in 1903, except for his oldest daughter who came
in sometime after Harry and before everyone else. She's our
line, but as she may be with Harry in 1900 I figured I'd work
through him. I know she came with an aunt, Leo & Ruchel
WINOGRAD into Castle Island, she was only 14 and had such a
hard time she refused to return.

Now to my problem. I looked through the 1900 Census and can
not find a single Russian in the entire soiundex category,
only English and Irish.

We know the name was probably DICKEE in Russia, BUT
Can anyone tell me what the RUSSIAN SPELLING might have been for
DICKEE??

I am thinking that I will have to work >from that Soundex. He might
not have "anglecized" the name yet!!??

Any ideas or suggestions??

Thanks ahead of time

Hi Jewishgenners,

Thank you so much for your help concerning the Synagogue that my
Grandparents ADOLF SCHINDLER and SIGNE STEINSAPIR were
married at. I am sure many of you will understand how grateful I am
especially when I never envisaged that any Jewish premises had
survived the Nazis particularly in Berlin of all places or even
following= the wall East Berlin. The fact is that the Liberale
Synagoge Rykestrasse 53 Prenzlauer Berg Berlin Germany still
exists and can be contacted on 30 442 5931. The Cemetery is
situated nearby.

I have been able to or have sufficient information to follow
all of the branches of my family except I thought SCHINDLER. Now
all being well, I will be able to find out more information about
my Grandfather and the rest of his family.

Searching "ROSENFELD" #general

Mark J. Budman <budman@...>

Hello all. I am an amateur genealogist doing some research on my family
tree. I am trying to locate a branch of my family by the family name of
"ROSENFELD". My grandfather (when he was alive) had spoken of a cousin of
his who helped sponsor him so he could immigrate to Canada. Below is the
information I have.

My grandfather: Sam (Tzudik) Budman, born approx 1903 in Pavoloch, (in the
Zhitomir region) in the Ukraine. He immigrated to Canada in 1927 with the
help of a B. Rosenfeld (Tzudik's uncle) who was living (according to a
letter I found) at 543 Vinnan St. in Hamilton, Ontario. Another individual
who helped was a B. (or D) Belapolsky, also of Hamilton.

The following is what I have found through research (and might not
necessarily be 100% correct):

I believe B. Rosenfeld was Benjamin Rosenfeld who was married to Martha.
There is also a Max Rosenfeld, and Jack Rosenfeld (which I think were the
sons of Ben and Martha).

Jack married Mary, and at one point they were living at 41 Kipling in
Hamilton.

Max lived at 107 Rossylyn Ave N in Hamilton and had a business called
Polan's Food Market.

My grandfather (Tzudik) had mentioned that we had relatives by the name of
Polan living in Hamilton.

Please respond and let me know either way if any of this information means
anything to you.

Thank you for your time.

Re: 1928 Zemplen Census #hungary

Dennis Baer <dbaer@...>

Hello Melody

Thank you for your letter to the HSIG. Now I know what the word appears
before the given names and the surnames in the 1828 Census of Munkacs. Yes I typed Munkacs. Someone will have the 1828 Munkacs census Microfilm soon at the local LDS and possibly will have printed out the entries for Munkacs so people can look up names of their ancestors if they paid taxes on some type of property. It does have the given first name as well as the last name. I have one page of this particular census for Munkacs and the first word looked very similar on each entery. The script does not look very easy to read but now I see they do look like Jud if of course they appeared Jewish.

Thank you.

Do you actually mean the 1828 census? If so, it is a tax census. I have
used the ones for Ung and Nitra with some success. If your ancestor had
taxable property - including servants, animals and fuit bearing trees,
he should be listed at least by surname. In the Ung 1828 census, Jews
are listed as "Jud" and the surname. .

Is GARZA a Sephardic name? #general

Steven Garza <stevengarza@...>

I did an internet search on my surname Garza to see if I could find
any information about the roots of the family name. I wanted to find
the roots of the name in Spain. One surprising hit that came back was
from the soc.culture.jewish FAQ: Jews As a Nation at this address:
<http://www.landfield.com/faqs/judaism/FAQ/07-Jews-As-Nation/>

In it, it said, "Jews have played an important role in the history
of Monterrey, Mexico. The Garza family, one of Mexico's richest,
of Cerveceria Moctezuma fame, are Jews." My great grandfather on my
dad's side is >from Monterrey, Mexico. On my mom's side of the family
tree I also have Garzas and can trace my ancestry back 8 generations
to a Blas Maria de la Garza Falcon. Her family has lived in southern
Texas for generations and was supposed to own land there long ago.
I'm curious as to the roots of my family and I want to learn if
the Sephardic connection is real, just rumor, or perhaps only a
small part of the Garza family was Jewish.

If anyone knows, let me know.

Thanks,
Steven Garza
