Re: Lumber Business #belarus

My family tradition is that my Minsk ancestors took lumber down river to the
coast for sale. The lumber was tied together into a raft. The family is
also said to have been carpenters and boat builders.

Dear Mr. Fischer,

I think it is a bit of a stretch >from Pobolovo to Palopokow etc.
The variants given in the original posting (which included the Yiddish,
Russian and Belorussian forms) pretty much exhaust the possibilities. You
might try to the ShtetlFinder online. Good luck !

Dear Donna!

I'm not sure you got correct explanations re Riga and Lubav >from you friends.
Lubav (or Lubava) is a pretty big port, you are absolutely right! Its modern
name is Lijepaya. But the distance between Riga and Lubava is about 180
kilometers. I guess it's too much to qualify these towns as "neighbors." You
family might live in Riga for the certain period of time, that's why they said
they came >from Riga...
