At age 95, my distant cousin Ilona Vincze died in Israel. Her mother and
my grandfather were siblings. Ilona's son and I have been corresponding for many years. He is now going through her papers and he is finding amazing things. Ilona saved letters written to her mother Karolina Krausz, by my grandfather, Harry Lefkowitz in the 1940s. They are in Hungarian and I will need them translated. So, I'm now lining up a list of potential translators whom I might retain for a reasonable fee, once I get copies of these letters. Anyone interested? As an aside, Ilona and her husband Laszlo, famous musicians, made aliya in 1935 >from Budapest and were among the founders of the Israel Philharmonic and many other music conservatories and institutions in Israel. When I was in Budpest, this archive was not open at its then listed times (or at all). Recommend anyone planning to try to use it be sure to call first. Barbara Kaufman I can only confirm the above message. Although it should be open once in a week, it's really difficult to get in. But it has an enormous advantage over other places: you can in fact hold the anyakonyvek/metrical books in your hand! No microfilms, no microfiches, but the real thing! If you find the archivist in good mood, you can even xerox them! Wish you a pleasant Sukkoth! Gyuri

To Dolph and Robert Klein -- The Klein family I'm researching were from
Ritova, Lithuania. The Hungarian family I'm researching are named Goldner and all I know is that they were >from Austria or Hungary -- records conflict. In any event, I'll send a copy of your e-mail to a friend whose last name is Klein and whose background is definitely Hungarian. His very elderly mother is still alive and perhaps he will send it to her. Best of luck with your research. Jim Kaye. JKaye29064@aol.com

hello Lorraine
you are wellcome to partisipate in this importent project i think the situation in the cemetery is a same and we need to do somthing i talk yesterday with the jewish community in libau and i hope we are on the right way i think also that we have to discase about a memorium in shkedan i will get in the near futur >from them the budget we need to establish this project Subject: COURLAND/LIBAU GROUP/LIBAU CEMETERY From: "K.& L. Bertelsen" <klb@mail.benalla.net.au> Date: Fri, 02 Oct 1998 13:42:26 X-Message-Number: 1 I refer to Avi's messages about the Libau Cemetery and Mike's comment about the formation of a Courland/Libau group in July. I subscribe to Latviasig, but do not remember seeing mention of the new group formation and would appreciate receiving any details about this group. My Mama Nana Emilie/Malka/Male Aronis Lando Gold was born in Libau in 1898 and was the only child of Anna/Chana nee Steinhauer Lapidus Aronis Pollack who was born in Vilna in 1878 and Dov Ber/Bernard ARONIS, who was born in Libau on 7th August 1866 and who died in Libau in 1901 aged 35 years. Dov Ber/Behr/Bernard ARONIS was the oldest child of Levin Leib ARONIS b.ca. 1833 d. Libau 8th November 1901 and Emma PALM. Levin Leib ARONIS was one of 7 children of DAVID ben Behr ARONIS b.ca. 1800 possibly d. before 1866? and Mahle/Malka bat Israel b.ca. 1798-1810 d. 8th January 1862 Libau. The Aronis family were LEVITES. My GMM left Libau after the early death of my GGF and probably returned to her family in Vilna and then headed south to Mogilev-Podolya/Vinnitza where her three sons >from her second marriage were born. Then to Odessa/fleeing to Roumania in 1921/Canada in 1925 and Australia in the mid 1930s. All contact with our ARONIS family seems to have been lost possibly before WWII although I know one of my GGF's first cousins and one of his paternal uncles emigrated to the USA. I have recently received some information >from the Riga Archives about my Aronis family and I understand that the research I commissioned from Aleksandrs Feigmanis should be arriving in the near future. I would be very interested in joining a Courland/Libau group and I am also interested the Libau cemetery discussion. Need help with Yiddish Translations

Helen May <hmay@...>
Dear Friends,
I have just come across a treasure trove of my grandfather's writing. Alas, it is all in Yiddish. I would love to have it translated but am not sure as to how to proceed to find someone reliable and not terribly expensive, who could do this for me. I have the feeling that some of the documents may contain the whole history of our family. My grandfather was also an officer of his Volochisk Benevolent Society and we have many copies of newspaper articles he wrote for a NY Jewish newspaper. It would be wonderful if I could also get some of these translated for our Volochisk group. You have all been so helpful to me in the past, I was hoping some of you might have some suggestions. TIA.
