Berlin Vital Records
#general
Joan C. Brown <jcb2502@...>
After reading through the FHC booklet for German research & being totally
unfamiliar with this area, am asking for some direction. Seeking to verify the Berlin births of Rheinhart/Richard BERNSTEIN, Feb 1882 and Lepold/Louie BERNSTEIN, Aug 1885. Parents were Joseph & Rose BERNSTEIN of Poland. Apparently I check in the FHC catalog under Germany, Prussia, Brandenburg... Jewish records? Can anyone who has done this offer a few words of advice? Joan Brown, Virginia

Searching: SCHNEIDER from Kiev
#general
Lynn DiMatteo <LiniWD@...>
Tracie -
On your signature on your success story (congratulations!!), you have SCHNEIDER >from Kiev. I also have SCHNEIDER ancestors >from Kiev - Abraham and Ida SCHNEIDER (SNYDER) owned a tavern on a crossroads outside of Kiev. They received advance notice of a pogrom and were able to sell the tavern and emigrate. They came over in 1882 with 4 or 5 of their children (the rest were born in the US in NYC). One of their daughters, Bessie, was my great grandmother. I have the names of all Bessie's brothers and sisters and many of their descendants. Bessie married Israel Goldberg in NYC and their children started the Goldberg family association in NY in 1929. Does anything sound familiar? Lynn Wertheim-DiMatteo Staten Island, N.Y. I would like to know how to translate "second (or any other number)To which Werner Cohn replied: "Vetter zweiten Grades," according to my Wildhagen dictionaryPerfectly correct, except that "Vetter" is only for a male cousin, a second cousin, female, would be: "Base zweiten Grades." Personally, I have always found the use of the word "Vetter" for cousin confusing, since it can also mean uncle. There is also another way of saying first cousin in German, and that is "Geschwisterkind," which might be found on some older documents. A second cousin could be either "Ander Geschwisterkind" or "Geschwisterkindskind." Werner -- Werner Hirsch Curator, JHS of Gr. New Haven (CT) JHS Homepage: http://pages.cthome.net/hirsch/

Baron is a fairly common forename for Jewish men. Is it uniquely so or do
non-Jews also have that name? I'm wondering that if one comes across that name in one's research can one assume that the person is Jewish? Harold Pollins Oxford England pollins@globalnet.co.uk
