Thanks to JGSLA #lithuania

Howard Margol

I sent the following message to Ted Gostin, President of the
JGS of LosAngeles. I am posting it here to encourage others
to also send a message of thanks. What the JGSLA did, is indeed
rare. Ted's e-mail address is: tedgostin@juno.com
Please send your message direct to Ted and not to the digest.

Dear Ted,

I think the $3,000 contribution to the Litvak SIG >from the JGSLA
was a wonderful thing to do. It shows a great spirit of cooperation
in the world of Jewish genealogy that many of us are hoping for.
It also proves that there is more to Jewish genealogy than
just the "me, me" syndrome. Congratulations to you and the
JGSLA for a decision well made.

Re: Databases. Three grades of membership in LatviasSIG #latvia

Prof. Harry J. Hirschhorn <hirshorn@...>

Dear Marion Werle, President, Latvia SIG, werle@pacificnet.net
In your last e-mail message, that was transmitted to all members [please
note all members] of LatvianSIG, you write:--
"We have published a lot of cemetery data in our newsletter, Latvia SIG. "

Thus we ordinary subscribers are made two realize, that there are at least 2
grades of membership in LitvakSIG. One grade is the ordinary subscriber,
and a higher grade are the paid-up members, who receive the newsletter. Why
not simply tell us:
""send membership dues of $ 30 to
Latvia SIG, pob 280422 Northridge CA-91328-0422 usa.
" get blank form on http://www.jewishgen.org/latvia/membership.html .
" When we litvak sig get your check, you get your newsletter.""
I have just mailed my annual dues. Sorry you dont handle credit cards.

I sense, that there is yet a third and higher grade of membership. It is
for those, who make the decisions for us. They moderate and monitor the
e-mail ,nd decide who is allowed access to our e-mail forum and what may be
said. It seems that to belong to the highest grade, a person must
contribute significant time and effort to LatvianSIG. I admire the good
people, who volunteer so much time and effort to make LatvianSIG a more
effective and productive tool for genealogical research and free exchange of
genealogical information, They rightly deserve our admiration and public
accolades,
But I also cherish the democratic rights of free speech for all of us, be we
1 . subscription members only, 2. paid up members, or 3. ruling members.

Greetings to all 3 classes of members from
Prof. Harry J. Hirschhorn , POB 114, Alfe Menashe 44851, Israel.
searching for GANS.

Especially for Robert Heyman (robeh@mindspring.com), our newsletter editor.
For the newsletter, I would like to suggest the following topics; perhaps
they already appeared in the past.? I believe many others are like me and
want to know more
about the background of our relatives and ancestors.
1. History of Jews in Latvia, brief outline 2 or 3 pages.
2. General history of Latvia, wars and economics. to serve as background
for 1. above. After all, our ancestors lived as a minority amongst the
general population as butchers, peddlers and tavern keepers, and were
affected by their economic situation.

3.List of Holocaust victims >from Latvia . Or is there a book like the book
by klarsfeld on France?
4. List of killing "actions by the Germans and willing allies in rounding
up and in killing Jews. with dates.
5. List of transports >from latvia to kz.

Shalom,

I wish to draw your attention to my web page, hosting the Czechoslovakia
Forum, at:
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Rue/4017/CZECH.HTM

The FORUM of Jewish communities (kehilot) >from Czechoslovakia contains a list
of over 550 lost communities >from Czechia, Moravia & Slezia, Slovakia
and Podkarpatska Rus, where there has once been a Jewish community
of over 50 living Jews... There are now over 261(!) "Connection People",
"Anshei Kesher", who are registered in the database, most of them were
born in the town and they volunteered to try and preserve its heritage, and
who can still give information... They lived there, they were expelled >from
there, they knew the people... They can give you information, not based on
registry books or crumbling documents >from state archives...
Their sources are their memory, their heart and their love to their destroyed
home towns...
They volunteered to be the "shomrei Ha'gakhelet" - "keepers of the ember" and
friends... this is the 90th minute. Take advantage of this!

Kindly contact Mr. Gabi Lana who is the coordinator of the project, at email:gl@iol.co.il

Do not contact me, my roots are entangled too deeply in the soil of Poland...

Re: Chava MODLIN the teacher from Riga #general

Kelly Modlin <Modlin.Fam.Search@...>

I'm interested in information regarding Chava MODLIN.
Chava was a teacher at the 1st Jewish Primary Govt. School of Riga.

In 1933 she volunteered, together with her husband. a highly qualified
mechanic to go to the autonomy region of Birobidjan, in order to teach
Jewish Children at the High School.
A daugther was born and they named her Biroleh after the Biro River which
flows through Birobidjan.

In 1937 with the wave of terror actions taken against non - communists and
Foreigners she was arrested together with her husband.
Their two year old daughter was separated >from them and confined to a
closed institute for children of prisoners.

Together with other foreign women she was held prisoner in the dungeons of
the Birobidjan NKVD, under the most inhuman conditions.
After many months of torture and ill treatment she was transferred to the
prison of Chabarobask in the Far Eastern Region of Russia.
There she died of the typhus fever and was buried in some unknown grave.

Anybody having information regarding:
The fate of the daughter Biroleh?
The name of Chava's husband?
Were their roots in Riga or some other Town or Shtetl?

Please contact me directly. All information would be appreciated.
